2022 Chevrolet Traverse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming actually take once you're at my car?

If you have one working key or fob already, adding a second to a 2022 Traverse typically runs about 15 to 20 minutes from the time I plug in. All-keys-lost is a different story. GM's security system on this generation has a built-in access timer that the programming tool has to sit through before it can write new keys. You can't rush it.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Almost always, yes. The dealer process involves scheduling, getting the vehicle there, waiting for a tech to be available, and sometimes waiting days for a fob to arrive if they don't stock it. Owners on Traverse forums have reported multi-day waits just for parts. I carry stock for this vehicle and come to you. Add-a-key runs 15 to 20 minutes on site. All-keys-lost runs 35 to 55 minutes. One stop, one working key, no tow required.

Q: My 2022 Traverse shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is brand new. What's actually going on?

This is one of the more common complaints I see on this generation. A few things can cause it even with a fresh battery. First, battery quality matters more than people expect. A no-name CR2032 can read full voltage on a basic tester but still drop under the load the fob's radio circuit pulls. Swap to a name-brand cell if you haven't already. Second, the fob antenna and the vehicle's receiver have to communicate cleanly.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2022 Traverse. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2022 Traverse smart fob requires a professional scan tool to enroll to the vehicle. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that works on this system. The fob you bought is just hardware until it gets written to your specific vehicle's security system through the OBD port. Bring the fob you purchased and I can program it on site, which is actually a reasonable way to save some money on the parts side of the job.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Main Avenue in Downtown Fallbrook wrapping up paperwork when the call came in. A mom near the elementary school pickup line.

Her 2022 Traverse fob had gone through the wash. Full cycle, full dry. The fob powered up when she held it close to the start button, but passive unlock on the door handles was dead, range was about six inches, and the key-not-detected warning was cycling on and off on the dash.

She had kids waiting, a pickup window closing, and zero interest in a dealer appointment that started with "can you bring it in Thursday."

I drove over, popped the fob open on my kit bag on the hood. The CR2032 inside had that slightly bloated, damp-contact look you get after a hot dryer cycle. Swapped in a fresh name-brand cell, cleaned the contact points, reseated everything. The fob woke back up but passive entry was still inconsistent at normal range. Water had gotten into the board.

Connected the scan tool to the OBD port, verified the existing fob was still enrolled, then programmed a new fob I had in stock. Walked every door, tested passive unlock on both handles, verified the start function, ran through all five buttons. Solid on everything.

The whole stop was under 35 minutes. She made her next errand with time to spare. I told her to hang onto the washed fob as a backup shell since the buttons and battery tray were still intact. The dealer had quoted her days out and a number I'm not going to repeat here. She saved a good chunk and never left the pickup line.

Chevrolet Traverse Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Chevrolet key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Call us directly. Chevy dealer service departments are closed evenings and most of Sunday, and OnStar is great for lockouts and towing but it cannot program a replacement fob or handle immobilizer enrollment. That work sits in a queue until the dealer reopens. I work evenings and weekends in Fallbrook, including Downtown Fallbrook, so you're not burning a Monday morning waiting for a Tuesday appointment just to get back into your own car.
