Corvette Key Security Through the Years
C4: Mechanical Key
Turns the ignition like any standard key, but no transponder chip inside. The C4 runs a simple mechanical key with no immobilizer system. Straightforward to replace, and the most affordable Corvette key we do.
C5: Transponder Era Begins
GM dropped a transponder chip into the key starting with the C5. Your key likely uses a PK3 system, which means a chip inside the key head talks to your car's computer before it will start. Laser-cut blade, three buttons on the fob, CR2032 battery. Losing all keys on a C5 means we need a Tech 2 scan tool to get you running again.
C6: Remote Head Key
The C6 combined the key and the remote into one unit, a remote head key with a laser-cut blade and integrated buttons. Still uses a transponder chip with an enhanced immobilizer. The LS7-powered Z06 and supercharged ZR1 use the same key platform as the base Stingray, so the key job is identical regardless of trim.
C7: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
Things got serious here. The C7 introduced push-button start and a proximity smart key with four buttons. Your key uses an advanced immobilizer that may require server authentication for programming. Still a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob, and the battery is a CR2032.
C8: Mid-Engine, Maximum Security
Mid-engine C8 brought GM's most advanced key security to date. Smart key with four buttons, push-button start, and an immobilizer system that can require server-based authentication or even dealer-only programming on certain trims. We handle many C8 key jobs on-site, but we will be upfront with you if your specific year and trim needs dealer involvement.
Identify Your Corvette Key
C4 VATS key: metal blade with a tiny resistor pellet visible mid-blade. No remote, no chip, just the resistor. Ohmmeter cut.
C5 PassKey III: plastic head with Philips chip inside, fused to the blade. Optional 3-button remote on a separate ring.
C6 PK3+ remote head: 3-4 buttons in the head, Hitag2 chip inside. CR2032 powers the buttons; the chip itself is passive.
Proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Four buttons, push-button start, and a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for manual door entry.
C8 uses a slim proximity fob with advanced encryption. Four buttons, push-button start, and the highest security level of any Corvette generation.

Corvette Problems We Fix Most
PassKey III Sync Loss After Battery Pull
C5 and C6 Corvettes occasionally lose PassKey III sync after a deep voltage drop or battery swap. Engine cranks, security light glows, no fire. We rerun the relearn at the curb in 30 minutes, BCM relearns the chip, you drive away.
C6/C7 Remote Head Wear
C7 and C8 Corvette proximity fobs occasionally lose pairing to the BCM after firmware updates or low fob battery. Push-start fails, key not detected. We rerun the BCM pairing curbside with the proper scanner, fob comes back online.
C8 Dealer-Only Lockouts
Earlier C5/C6 Corvettes can throw transponder errors when the cylinder slot reader weakens. The chip in the key is fine, the antenna ring around the cylinder is the culprit. We replace the ring on-site and recode if needed.
C4 to C5 Year Confusion
First check on a mid-90s Corvette: 1996 or 1997? That year is everything. 1995-1996 C4 uses a plain mechanical key, no chip. 1997 C5 requires a transponder and different programming. Bought one in Coronado? Dial (619) 876-1271 and we sort it by VIN.
Corvette Key DIY: What Is Realistic
For the C5 fob buttons, on-board sync works: ignition to ON, lock and unlock held together for 8 seconds, fob beeps. The PassKey III chip itself needs scanner work on a fresh key. The C4 VATS resistor needs an ohmmeter and the right cut blank.
C6 (2005-2013) PK3+ Hitag2 chips need OBD scanner programming, full stop. No on-board learn exists for adding a new chipped key. The remote functions on existing fobs can be resynced on-board with the lock-unlock hold trick.
C7 and C8 proximity smart keys (2014+) require Tech 2 or aftermarket equivalent for any key addition. Add-key with one working fob is roughly 20 minutes. All-keys-lost needs the GM Techline SPS PIN on top of the scanner. We carry both.
The C7 still supports the 10-minute relearn with one working key. Turn the working key to ON, wait for the security light to go out, swap to the new key within 10 seconds. All keys lost requires OBD-II programming.
You can pair a new remote fob through the DIC menu, but you need two working keys already recognized by the car. Place both on the passenger seat, navigate to Remote Key Learn, and follow the prompts. Transponder programming and all-keys-lost situations require pro or dealer tools.

Corvette ZR1 Trivia
The Corvette ZR1 name has lived across multiple generations with wildly different engines. C4 ZR1 (1990-1995) ran the exotic Lotus-developed LT5 V8 at 405 hp. The 2025 C8 ZR1 cranks 1,064 hp out of a twin-turbo LT7. That is a 159% jump in 30 years, the same nameplate carrying two completely different mechanical philosophies.
