Out near the Seacoast neighborhood in Imperial Beach, I got a call from a Corvette owner who had been sitting in a parking lot for about forty minutes before he found me. His four-button remote had gone completely dead. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He had already swapped the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move, but the fob still did nothing.

When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could see right away that the battery contacts had a faint green tint to them. Slow corrosion, probably from a battery that had sat in there too long and leaked just enough to coat the contacts without being obvious. He had put the fresh CR2032 in on top of that and the connection was still dirty.

I cleaned the contacts, seated the new battery properly, and the fob came back to life. Locks, unlocks, panic, trunk release, all four buttons working before I even had to think about reprogramming.

That is the part of the job I always check before anything else on these. A corroded contact reads the same as a dead fob to the owner. The fix took maybe eight minutes. He had been about to call the dealer and ask about a replacement, which would have been a much longer wait and a much bigger bill for something that did not need replacing at all.
