He was at a taco shop near Torrey Pines when his backpack disappeared from the booth. Someone grabbed it while he was at the counter. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. He borrowed the cashier's phone and called the police first, then his girlfriend, then me.
His 2012 Chevrolet Corvette was sitting in the lot with zero working keys. When his girlfriend called the dealer, they said they could order the parts but the car would need to be towed in, it would take several business days, and since the stolen fob could still open the doors, they recommended rekeying as part of the job. The combined estimate made her go quiet for a second.
I got there that evening.
All-keys-lost on a Corvette is a different animal from adding a spare. When you add a spare, the car already trusts an existing fob and enrolls the new one alongside it. All-keys-lost means I wipe the entire key memory from scratch so the stolen fob becomes useless to the immobilizer. I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, cleared the old fob data from the body control module, and registered two new fobs from a clean slate. The factory fob on the Corvette is a 4-button proximity unit, and I cut the emergency blade insert for both so he had a physical backup as well. Both fobs were fully working before the police even called back.
He drove home that night. The stolen fob can still physically slip into a door lock, but the immobilizer will not let the engine fire. That part matters.
The dealer comparison barely came up. He was just glad to be driving home instead of waiting a week.
