There is no blade tucked inside the fob housing the way you see on some later GM keyless systems. If you lose the key blade, that's a cutting and programming job. If you lose the fob, that's a separate remote programming job.

Q: My 2004 Corvette cranks and immediately dies. Is that a key problem or something else?

A crank-and-stall in about two seconds, combined with a security warning on the dash, points directly at the immobilizer not recognizing the key. The system cuts fuel as a theft deterrent when it doesn't see a valid transponder. Common causes: a key that was never fully learned to begin with, a key learn that was done incorrectly and only held temporarily, or a damaged transponder chip in the key itself.

Q: My 2004 Corvette fob stopped working but the key still starts the car fine. Do I need a new fob?

Start with the battery. The fob takes a CR2032 and they do go dead without much warning. Swap it, make sure it seats flat against the contacts, and retest all four buttons. If one button works and others don't, the contacts on the dead buttons may just need a clean. If the fob does nothing after a fresh battery, it may have lost its pairing with the car or the fob itself is faulty.

I got a call from a guy in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, parking lot near the community center. He'd already had a locksmith out once. Paid full price. Key was cut, key was programmed, or so he was told. But every time he turned the ignition, the engine fired and died inside two seconds. Classic crank-and-stall from an immobilizer that didn't accept the key.

The previous tech had told him the body control module was failing and left. That's a convenient diagnosis when you can't figure out what went wrong.

I connected through the OBD port and pulled the security data. The module was fine. The key had been written into a temporary state during the earlier session and never committed. Probably because the tech didn't sit through the full timed relearn. That timer exists for a reason, and there's no shortcut around it.

I cleared the incomplete key data, ran the full learn sequence from scratch, and waited out the timer. When it confirmed the key was permanently enrolled, I had him start the car three times cold to make sure it held. It did.

He'd already paid once for work that wasn't finished. I couldn't do anything about that. I just made sure he wasn't paying twice for the same incomplete job.
