First Generation (T300)
Remote head key with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip and three buttons. You turn this key in the ignition like a traditional key, and the PK3 immobilizer checks the chip before letting the engine start. Programming is done on-board, and the whole job usually takes about 20 minutes in your driveway.
First Generation Mid-Cycle Refresh
Same Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip and three-button remote head key, but GM upgraded to the PK3+ Enhanced immobilizer under the hood. Key looks identical to the earlier years. We program these with our Autel IM608 through the OBD-II port, which means faster and more reliable results than the older Tech2 method.
First Generation Late Models
Security got serious here. Higher trims switched to a smart key with push-button start, running a Hitag 2 Extended (ID46E, NXP PCF7961E) chip and the PK3+ Advanced immobilizer. Programming requires OBD-II access plus a PIN from GM's server. Takes a bit longer, but we handle the entire process on-site without a tow.

Sonic No-Start with Security Light Lit
PK3+ chip lost sync to the BCM after deep voltage drop or ignition cylinder weakening. Engine spins, no fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, recode the chip, swap the cylinder if needed, you keep driving.
Fob Battery Burn
Sonic cylinders past 80K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to the existing key.
Immobilizer Sync Drop After Battery Replacement
Sonic fob CR2032 dies and lock-unlock quit responding. Swap battery curbside, resync via door switch sequence, you are back in business.
Proximity Sensor Issues (2018-2020)
Owners think the smart key fob is dead when the real problem is a faulty antenna in the door handle or near the start button. Your 2018-2020 Sonic uses proximity sensors; when antennas fail, the car acts like the key is not there. We test fob signal first.
Sonic DIY: Honest Limits
Fob buttons (lock, unlock, panic) resync on-board after CR2032 swap via the door switch sequence. Quick 5-minute DIY win.
Chip pairing for a fresh key is OBD-scanner-only. No on-board key learn exists for the Sonic. Add-key with one working key takes about 25 minutes curbside.
All-keys-lost on a 2018+ Sonic Hitag2 needs SPS PIN sourcing. Marco has the GM Techline account, so we handle the PIN side ourselves.
There is no DIY two-key add procedure for transponder programming on the Sonic. You need an OBD-II scan tool with GM support and the vehicle's 8-digit PIN. That is where we come in.
