2015 Chevrolet Sonic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2015 Chevrolet Sonic Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Bressi Ranch called me about a month after buying a used 2015 Sonic from a small independent lot. He was careful about it, too. Asked the lot upfront about the key situation. They handed him one key, told him to get a spare made at a hardware store, and said it was simple.

He went to two hardware stores. Neither one could touch it. The flip key design and the transponder inside it put it past anything a copy counter handles.

So he called the dealer. They gave him a number that made him stop and read it back. He called me the same afternoon and asked if that quote was real. I told him dealer pricing on programmed keys for modern GM vehicles is genuinely that high, and that there was another option.

I met him at his place in Bressi Ranch. The Sonic was in the driveway, one original fob, slightly worn from daily use. I cut a new key blade to match the vehicle, transferred the remote functions, and ran the programming sequence so the immobilizer recognized the new key alongside the original. Tested locks, tested ignition, tested the flip mechanism on both keys.

He had a second working key in about forty minutes. The dealer never came up again after I gave him the final number. He just nodded, pocketed both keys, and said he wished the lot had told him to call a locksmith from the start.

What I didn't say, but thought: that second key also means if he ever loses the first one, it's a standard add-a-key job. Not an all-keys-lost job. Those two things are not priced the same.
