There is a coin laundry on the south end of Third Avenue Village, and that is where I got the call. A woman had a Sonic that was starting fine in the morning and dying by afternoon. The dash was throwing a security warning, the engine would catch for a second and cut out, and she had already been told by another locksmith that the key was programmed and good to go.
It was not good to go.
I pulled up next to her car, popped the diagnostic port, and read the key data. The transponder the other shop had used was a close match but not the right one for this vehicle's security system. It cleared the initial pairing but failed deeper verification over repeated start cycles. That is a pattern I have seen before. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted her, and she did not have to leave the neighborhood to get it done right.
