2020 Chevrolet Sonic
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2020 Chevrolet Sonic Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There is a coin laundry on the south end of Third Avenue Village, and that is where I got the call. A woman had a Sonic that was starting fine in the morning and dying by afternoon.

The dash was throwing a security warning, the engine would catch for a second and cut out, and she had already been told by another locksmith that the key was programmed and good to go.

It was not good to go.

I pulled up next to her car, popped the diagnostic port, and read the key data. The transponder the other shop had used was a close match but not the right one for this vehicle's security system. It cleared the initial pairing but failed deeper verification over repeated start cycles. That is a pattern I have seen before. A chip that is almost right looks like it works until the vehicle gets enough drive cycles to catch the mismatch.

I also checked her fob battery. The CR2032 was sitting near the bottom of its charge, which was adding intermittent detection issues on top of the chip problem. Two faults at once is the worst diagnostic situation because they mask each other.

I programmed a correct replacement fob matched to her Sonic, swapped the battery, and walked every function before I left. Lock, unlock, remote start button, the trunk release, the panic button. Everything live, on-site, in the parking lot.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted her, and she did not have to leave the neighborhood to get it done right.
