2016 Chevrolet Sonic Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman out in Harbison Canyon called me about a 2016 Sonic. Said her key was "falling apart."
That description usually means one of two things, and when I pulled up I could see exactly which one it was: the flip key shell had cracked clean through at the hinge pivot point. The blade was still attached, barely, but it rocked side to side when she folded it out. The kind of thing that happens after a few years of the key living at the bottom of a bag.
She had already been to the dealer. They told her she needed a full replacement key, cut and programmed, and quoted her a number that made her stop and call around instead. What nobody at the dealer mentioned was that the circuit board inside that cracked shell was working perfectly. The remote locked and unlocked the car just fine if she held the pieces together. The transponder was reading normally. There was nothing wrong with the electronics.
I brought replacement flip key shells to her garage. Transferred her working circuit board into a fresh housing, verified the blade cut was still accurate and cut a matching replacement blade, then ran a full function check: all five buttons, the flip blade action, a couple of start cycles to confirm the transponder was communicating cleanly. Took less than half an hour parked in her driveway.
She saved a significant chunk compared to what the dealer quoted for a complete new key she did not need. The part that was broken was the plastic. The part that mattered was fine.
