About Mitsubishi Keys

Mitsubishi key replacement overview in San Diego County

Three decades of Mitsubishi key systems live on San Diego County roads, from late-1990s Galants with basic ID46 transponder chips to current Outlander and Eclipse Cross builds running full proximity smart keys. Every one of them can be cut and programmed at the car. No dealer markup, no service queue, no diagnostic fee gate.

Mitsubishi Programming Happens Where the Car Is, Not at a Service Counter

Mitsubishi

Pull a Mitsubishi VIN built any time after the late 1990s and you find a programmed key in the security chain. The transition started in 1998 with chips landing in the Galant and Eclipse, then evolved into ID47 and 4D-series transponders for later Lancer and Outlander builds. Proximity smart keys arrived first on the 2007 Outlander, with the Lancer following on higher trims in 2008. One detail worth nailing down before calling around: Mitsubishi does not support DIY add-key procedures on any platform, the dealer service manual is explicit about it.

Mitsubishi The Toolkit Behind Every Mitsubishi Job

The Toolkit Behind Every Mitsubishi Job

The toolkit that handles all of this is built around the Autel IM608, the Smart Pro, and the FVDI2, three programmers that between them cover every OBD-II key registration scenario the Outlander, Lancer, Mirage, Eclipse Cross, and Outlander Sport throw at us. The standard workflow looks like this: you call, we decode the VIN to confirm the exact transponder type, we arrive with the right blank, we cut and pair the key on the spot. Even all-keys-lost on 2007 through 2024 builds finishes without a tow truck.

Pro Tip

Mitsubishi pro tip

If there is one make where the emergency start procedure varies dramatically by model and year, it is Mitsubishi. Use the wrong technique and the car will not respond, leading owners to assume the system is broken when it is actually working as designed. The cheat sheet by model: 2022 and newer Outlander, press the dead fob flat against the Start/Stop button itself. 2010 to 2021 Outlander, find the small slot between the dash and center console and slide the fob in. ASX and RVR, the backup slot is inside the glovebox. Lancer, physically reattach the dead fob to its emergency blade and slide the whole assembly into the dashboard ignition slot before pressing Start.

Mitsubishi The Passive Chip Behind Every Backup Start

The Passive Chip Behind Every Backup Start

What unifies all those backup methods is the passive RFID transponder buried inside every Mitsubishi fob. That chip needs no battery to communicate, the car's reader powers it briefly through induction whenever it gets close enough. The CR2032 inside the fob only matters for the remote unlock and lock buttons. Door access when the fob is fully dead happens through the mechanical blade in the door handle cylinder. That blade unlock will set off the alarm temporarily, and the alarm silences itself the moment the engine fires successfully.

Mitsubishi Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Mitsubishi dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Run the dealer bill end to end and it stacks up fast: $150 for a transponder, around $320 for a proximity smart key, then a $100 to $150 diagnostic fee before they will so much as plug in a scanner, then a tow on top of that for any all-keys-lost on a 2010 or newer Mitsubishi. Our flat mobile pricing folds in all of it, the diagnostic, the cut, the programming, and the visit itself, no tow line item.

Mitsubishi Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Mitsubishi Outlander Chip Dislodged Inside the Key Body
Outlander Chip Dislodged Inside the Key Body
Here is a failure mode unique to the Outlander key: the transponder chip itself can come loose from its mounting inside the plastic housing and shift out of position. The car throws a B1A35 fault and a key not detected warning, and the temptation is to assume the battery is dead even though it tests fine. The fix is mechanical, reseat the chip in its housing and the car recognizes the key again, no reprogramming required. That distinguishes it cleanly from a battery or receiver problem.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Fobs Dropping Signal at Random
Lancer Evolution Fobs Dropping Signal at Random
A pattern Evo owners report consistently: the car loses fob detection randomly, swapping in fresh batteries does nothing, and crucially both fobs in the household start failing at the same time. When both fobs fail simultaneously, the math points away from the fob and toward circuit board wear or a vehicle-side antenna problem. As a temporary workaround, pressing the fob firmly against the Start/Stop reader can force a read when the wireless signal is marginal. Permanent fix requires hands-on diagnosis at the car, not just another battery.
Mitsubishi Cracked Rubber Pads on Aging Colt Z30 Fobs
Cracked Rubber Pads on Aging Colt Z30 Fobs
Colt Z30 fobs from the 2002 to 2012 production run have a known aging issue with their rubber button pads, which crack from years of use combined with UV exposure that San Diego County delivers in abundance. Underneath the rubber, the SMD button contacts also wear out over the same timeframe, so even an intact pad can have dead buttons. The repair pathway is a shell and pad swap that restores the fob without erasing programming, and we keep the parts on the truck.
Mitsubishi Mitsubishi With Zero Working Keys
Mitsubishi With Zero Working Keys
Every Mitsubishi built after 2000 locks new key registration behind a security PIN stored in the immobilizer ECU, which has to be pulled through OBD-II before any blank can be paired. Outlander, Lancer, Mirage, and Eclipse Cross builds from 2007 through 2024 are all serviceable mobile, and the programmers that get it done are the Autel, the FVDI2, and the Zed-Full. The VIN tells us exactly which procedure applies, so dispatch happens with the right tooling already loaded.

Mitsubishi Key Fob Battery Guide

Mitsubishi How to Open the Shell

How to Open the Shell

First step is always the same: locate the release button or slide lever on the back of the fob and pop out the metal emergency blade before anything else. Once the blade is clear, you will see a thin seam around the edge of the fob shell. A coin, a thumbnail, or a plastic spudger applied at the notch on the back will start splitting the halves apart. Warning specifically for 2014 through 2021 Outlander fobs, the internal plastic clips on those housings are notoriously brittle and will snap if you force a metal tool into the seam. Use plastic only on those years. The 2022 and newer Outlander fobs upgraded to a slide release that makes the whole process easier.
CR2032
Mitsubishi Battery Type and Resync

Battery Type and Resync

Most Mitsubishi fobs run a CR2032, which covers the Lancer, the ASX, and the bulk of Outlander years. Watch out for select 2022 and newer Outlander trims that took a CR2025 instead, same diameter but a thinner profile, so the 2032 will not seat correctly. The FCC ID printed on the back of the fob is the authoritative answer for which cell to buy. Programming survives a battery change on every Mitsubishi platform, that data lives in the car. If the remote buttons stop responding after the swap, the fob needs a resync sequence, not a full reprogram, and we can walk you through the steps over the phone.

Mitsubishi Outlander Key Replacement

Mitsubishi

The call we field most often for Mitsubishi across San Diego County is Outlander-related, which tracks with its position as the brand's best-selling model. It also happens to be a historical first, the original Mitsubishi to ship with a proximity smart key in the US market, debuting that system in 2007 ahead of the rest of the lineup. The third-generation Outlanders, covering 2014 through 2021, run FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N with OEM part number 8637A316 on the standard 3-button fob. Later trims of that generation switched to OUCJ166N.

Mitsubishi Fourth-Gen Outlander and Recurring Faults

Fourth-Gen Outlander and Recurring Faults

From 2022 forward, the fourth-generation Outlander introduced an updated proximity fob and changed the dead-fob workflow at the same time, no more console slot, instead you hold the dead fob directly against the Start/Stop button. All-keys-lost on any generation of Outlander runs through our Autel IM608 and FVDI2 stack, which reads the ECU security PIN through OBD without a tow truck involved. The B1A35 fault triggered by the chip-detachment issue also resolves at the car in most cases, no full key replacement required.

Mitsubishi Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
