About Mitsubishi Keys

Three decades of Mitsubishi key systems live on San Diego County roads, from late-1990s Galants with basic ID46 transponder chips to current Outlander and Eclipse Cross builds running full proximity smart keys. Every one of them can be cut and programmed at the car. No dealer markup, no service queue, no diagnostic fee gate.
Mitsubishi Programming Happens Where the Car Is, Not at a Service Counter

Pull a Mitsubishi VIN built any time after the late 1990s and you find a programmed key in the security chain. The transition started in 1998 with chips landing in the Galant and Eclipse, then evolved into ID47 and 4D-series transponders for later Lancer and Outlander builds. Proximity smart keys arrived first on the 2007 Outlander, with the Lancer following on higher trims in 2008. One detail worth nailing down before calling around: Mitsubishi does not support DIY add-key procedures on any platform, the dealer service manual is explicit about it.

The Toolkit Behind Every Mitsubishi Job
The toolkit that handles all of this is built around the Autel IM608, the Smart Pro, and the FVDI2, three programmers that between them cover every OBD-II key registration scenario the Outlander, Lancer, Mirage, Eclipse Cross, and Outlander Sport throw at us. The standard workflow looks like this: you call, we decode the VIN to confirm the exact transponder type, we arrive with the right blank, we cut and pair the key on the spot. Even all-keys-lost on 2007 through 2024 builds finishes without a tow truck.
Pro Tip

If there is one make where the emergency start procedure varies dramatically by model and year, it is Mitsubishi. Use the wrong technique and the car will not respond, leading owners to assume the system is broken when it is actually working as designed. The cheat sheet by model: 2022 and newer Outlander, press the dead fob flat against the Start/Stop button itself. 2010 to 2021 Outlander, find the small slot between the dash and center console and slide the fob in. ASX and RVR, the backup slot is inside the glovebox. Lancer, physically reattach the dead fob to its emergency blade and slide the whole assembly into the dashboard ignition slot before pressing Start.

The Passive Chip Behind Every Backup Start
What unifies all those backup methods is the passive RFID transponder buried inside every Mitsubishi fob. That chip needs no battery to communicate, the car's reader powers it briefly through induction whenever it gets close enough. The CR2032 inside the fob only matters for the remote unlock and lock buttons. Door access when the fob is fully dead happens through the mechanical blade in the door handle cylinder. That blade unlock will set off the alarm temporarily, and the alarm silences itself the moment the engine fires successfully.
Mitsubishi Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Run the dealer bill end to end and it stacks up fast: $150 for a transponder, around $320 for a proximity smart key, then a $100 to $150 diagnostic fee before they will so much as plug in a scanner, then a tow on top of that for any all-keys-lost on a 2010 or newer Mitsubishi. Our flat mobile pricing folds in all of it, the diagnostic, the cut, the programming, and the visit itself, no tow line item.

Mitsubishi Key Fob Battery Guide

How to Open the Shell

Battery Type and Resync
Most Mitsubishi fobs run a CR2032, which covers the Lancer, the ASX, and the bulk of Outlander years. Watch out for select 2022 and newer Outlander trims that took a CR2025 instead, same diameter but a thinner profile, so the 2032 will not seat correctly. The FCC ID printed on the back of the fob is the authoritative answer for which cell to buy. Programming survives a battery change on every Mitsubishi platform, that data lives in the car. If the remote buttons stop responding after the swap, the fob needs a resync sequence, not a full reprogram, and we can walk you through the steps over the phone.
Mitsubishi Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
