The Outlander Sport Key Architecture, 2011 Through 2026
Remote Head Key, ID46 Chip
You turn this key in the ignition like a 1990s car, but inside the head sits an ID46 transponder talking to the immobilizer on every start. No handshake, no engine fire. We program on-board with Autel or Xhorse tools, quick and uncomplicated on the curb.
Flip Key, ID46 Chip
Mitsubishi shifted to a flip-key housing here. Blade folds into the fob, sleeker and easier to carry. Same ID46 chip, same on-board programming. We close it out in your driveway in 20 to 35 minutes. PIN code extraction is part of the standard workflow.
Smart Key with Push-Button Start
This is where things stepped up. Mitsubishi rolled out their FAST Key proximity system with an ID46/ID47 family chip. Keep the fob in your pocket, push the button to start. Programming demands OBD-II diagnostic access, so we plug into the diagnostic port and write the new key directly. No ignition slot.
Smart Key with Immobilizer II
The final facelift layered Mitsubishi Immobilizer II with server-based authentication on top. Programming now requires online verification through Mitsubishi servers. We handle it with VVDI tools and server access. These jobs take a bit longer than earlier models, but they still close out on the curb in San Diego.
Identify Your Outlander Sport Key
Traditional plastic-head remote with three buttons moulded into the head and a standard blade. You slide it into the ignition and turn it. Transponder chip lives in the head.
Blade folds into the fob body when stored. Side release button pops the blade out and it slots into the ignition. Same insert-and-turn flow as the earlier remote-head.
Thicker proximity fob you keep in your pocket. The Outlander Sport detects it on approach and lets you push-button start. Hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
Visually nearly identical to the 2016-2018 fob, internally a more advanced immobilizer underneath. Same push-button start, same emergency blade tucked inside.
San Diego Pricing on an Outlander Sport Key
Price covers the blank, cutting, programming, and on-vehicle testing. San Diego lockouts run $105 to $145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Mitsubishi Dealer
When the last key snaps at 9 PM in Pacific Beach, the dealer is closed. The van is not.
San Diego Outlander Sport Key Problems We Knock Out
Transponder Failure
Key turns, cranks, dies, security light lit. The ID46 chip in 2011-2015 keys wears from heat cycles in San Diego cars, and once it stops talking the engine refuses. We cut and program a fresh key with new chip on the curb in under 30 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Owners blame the smart key when the real culprit is a drained CR2032. The 2016-2026 proximity fobs burn batteries fast if left in the vehicle because car and fob keep pinging. Battery first. If that is the fix, you hear it straight.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
After a flat 12V or a jump, the ECU can lose its handshake with the transponder. Not a key failure. A communication breakdown between two computers. We pull the PIN and resync the existing key, saving the cost of a whole new key.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
First check: is it actually a key problem? When power locks work intermittently, the default assumption is a dying fob. But on 2011-2018 Outlander Sports the door actuator motor wears out. Mechanical repair, not locksmith, we tell you straight up.
Can You Program an Outlander Sport Key Yourself?
No path. The ID46 transponder demands professional tools and PIN code extraction to pair with the immobilizer. No DIY procedure exists.
No path. Same story. The Mitsubishi immobilizer requires on-board programming with diagnostic gear like Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI. No shortcut.
No path. The FAST Key system with the ID47 chip needs OBD-II diagnostic programming. No button sequence or ignition procedure works at home.
No path. Server-based authentication piled on top of OBD-II access. Professional tools and Mitsubishi server verification are both mandatory.
