Once you are inside, you do not just turn the blade in the ignition like an old key. On this system, you hold the fob itself against the start button area and press the button with your foot on the brake. The car reads the fob through proximity even without battery power in it. First check the obvious: the CR2032 in the fob. Even a battery that tests okay under no load can drop out when the fob is actually trying to communicate with the car. Swap it with a fresh one from a reliable brand before anything else.

If the battery is genuinely new and the problem keeps happening, the next suspect is the fob itself. The internal antenna coil in these fobs can develop a hairline issue, especially on a key ring that takes daily abuse. The car may read it fine when you hold the fob right against the start button, but fail at normal pocket distance.

The third possibility is the antenna ring around the start button or the receiver in the car. If a second fob shows the same behavior, the issue is on the vehicle side, not the fob. That points to the receiver or its wiring and is worth checking before replacing keys that do not actually need replacing.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Outlander Sport. Can I program it myself?

No. There is no DIY sequence for the smart key system on this vehicle. No ignition cycling trick, no button combination, nothing you can do from the driver's seat.

Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to communicate with the immobilizer and register the new fob.
