The Montero Key Architecture, 2000 Through 2006
V60/V70 Platform
Mitsubishi rolled out the immobilizer system on the third-gen Montero, stepping past the older mechanical-only keys. The 2000-2002 carries a Texas 4D 61 transponder chip inside a standard blade with a 3-button remote. Programming runs on-board through the OBD-II port, which means we close it out right at your vehicle in San Diego with no flatbed.
V80/V90 Platform
Mitsubishi carried the same Texas 4D 61 chip into the refreshed V80/V90 platform, so the security architecture stayed steady. The remote got a slight update and the keyway shifted between MIT1 and MIT12 depending on trim, but programming still runs through the OBD-II port on-board. Same chip, same process, same outcome on the curb.
Identify Your Montero Key
Traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head holding both the transponder chip and a 3-button remote (lock, unlock, panic). Chip talks to the immobilizer every ignition turn.
Same concept as the earlier years. Metal blade with a transponder chip in the head and a 3-button remote fob. Blade profile may vary slightly between MIT1 and MIT12 depending on your specific trim.

San Diego Montero Key Problems We Knock Out
Key Programming Erases All Keys
The Mitsubishi immobilizer wipes every key from memory when a new key programs on 2000-2006 Monteros. Bring every key you own when the van arrives, or older keys become paperweights. We reprogram the full set in one session.
Fault Codes Block Programming
New key inserted, ignition turned, nothing, immobilizer light blinking. Stored fault codes in the ECU or immobilizer block any new key from registering. We scan and clear codes first before attempting programming, a step most shops skip.
Transponder Recognition Failure
Owners assume the ignition is failing when a 2003-2006 Montero cranks but refuses to start. Real culprit is usually a weak Texas 4D 61 transponder in the key head. Blade turns fine but the chip signal is too weak. We test signal and replace the transponder.
Can You Program a Montero Key Yourself?
Transponder no, remote yes (with a working key). The transponder chip needs professional OBD-II tools like SmartBox or Autel IM608. The remote fob you can program yourself with the DLC jumper and hazard-switch method as long as one working key sits in the ignition. The remote procedure does not touch the transponder chip, so it only handles lock, unlock, and panic.

San Diego Montero Trivia
Worth knowing: the Montero Texas Instruments 4D-61 transponder is shared with the Mitsubishi Diamante. Both models ran the same immobilizer architecture, which means the security brain in your rugged SUV carries identical electronic DNA to Mitsubishi flagship luxury sedan of the same era. Two very different vehicles, one identical chip protocol.
