I got a call from a guy out near the Viejas Area in Alpine who had been fighting his 2006 Montero ignition for a few weeks.
Not a full no-start, just the kind of slow-developing problem that makes you question whether today is the day it stops turning at all. Some mornings it turned clean. Other mornings he was sitting in the lot wiggling the key back and forth, hoping it would catch.

I checked the cylinder first before touching anything else. The wear was in the wafers, not the lock body itself. That is a meaningful difference. A worn wafer stack causes exactly the kind of intermittent catch he was describing, but it does not mean the whole cylinder is garbage.
I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key to match. The transponder chip in the new key got programmed through the OBD port on site. I put the old wafers on the hood so he could see the actual problem with his own eyes.
The ignition turned smooth on the first try with the new key. He saved a real chunk compared to the dealer quote, and he did not pay for parts he did not need. That is the part that stuck with him.
