2000 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in Richland, a guy called me about his 2000 Montero. He had one key left and it was worn enough that he was starting to wonder how much life it had. He'd already called the Mitsubishi dealer and gotten a quote that made him pause, so he went looking for another option.
I pulled up to his building with everything I needed. The Montero from this era takes a transponder key, meaning there's a chip inside the head of the key that has to be recognized by the vehicle's immobilizer before it'll let the engine run. A cut blade with no programmed chip, or a chip that hasn't been enrolled, and the car either won't start at all or starts and immediately stalls.
I decoded the blade from the door lock, cut a new key to match, and programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port. The whole job was done in one visit, parked right where he lived. He had a working spare in hand and never had to arrange a tow or sit in a dealer waiting room.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and the thing he kept coming back to was that he didn't have to go anywhere.
