The Montero Sport Key Architecture
A quick timeline of Montero Sport key technology, generation by generation.
Second Generation (K90/K98 Chassis)
Remote-head key with a standard blade, three buttons across the face, and a transponder chip moulded into the head. Your Montero Sport runs the Mitsubishi Immobilizer system, reading that chip every ignition turn. Wrong chip means the engine cranks but refuses to fire. Remote handles lock, unlock, and trunk while the transponder handles starting the engine.

Traditional metal blade with a thick plastic head holding both the transponder chip and the remote buttons. Turn it in the ignition to fire the engine. Buttons handle the door cylinders and trunk.

Transponder Programming Failures
Wire the jumper, cycle ignition, the procedure goes nowhere. Montero Sport on-board programming is timing-sensitive, and ACC-to-OFF cycles a fraction too slow get ignored. The van carries diagnostic tools that bypass timing and program directly.
Key Fob Battery Depletion
The CR2032 in these fobs drains faster than expected, especially in warm Mira Mesa and El Cajon. Range collapses before the cell quits. Pop the fob, fresh CR2032 positive side up, back in business. Remote still dead? The circuit board may need attention.
Diagnostic Port Access Issues
First check when remote programming fails: the DLC connector under the dash. Terminals 1 and 4 need a clean connection or the jumper method aborts. Corrosion or wrong terminals kill it. We carry pin diagrams and jumper tools for the Montero Sport DLC.
Can You Program It Yourself?
Remote-only path. The keyless-entry fob enrolls yourself with the DLC jumper-wire method under the dash. Only lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. The transponder chip side, the half that actually fires the engine, still needs professional tools like a SmartBox.

San Diego Montero Sport Trivia
Most owners do not realise the 2000-2004 Montero Sport remote fob (part number OUCG8D-525M-A) can program up to 4 remotes in a single session using nothing but a jumper wire on the diagnostic port. Every successfully learned remote triggers the vehicle to lock and unlock the doors once as confirmation. One of the cleverer low-tech programming methods Mitsubishi ever shipped.
