2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Shadowridge, Vista. Townhouse complex, tight entrance, low overhead clearance. He had a 2001 Montero Sport sitting in his assigned spot against a back wall. Lost his only key somewhere over the weekend and a tow truck had already come out, taken one look at the entrance, and left without the vehicle.

He found me online and asked if I could actually get in there. I told him that was the whole point of doing this mobile.

I parked on the street and walked in with my bag. The Montero Sport was wedged into the far end of the covered parking, maybe a foot of clearance on the driver side. Didn't matter. I don't need a lift, I don't need a bay.

The 2001 uses a transponder key, no remote, no buttons. A replacement key has to be cut to the vehicle and the chip inside the key head has to be enrolled into the immobilizer. I cut the new key blade to match the lock, then handled the transponder programming through the OBD port. The whole process was done in that covered spot.

He stood back and watched, mostly quiet. When I handed him the key and he started the engine on the first try, he just nodded. That reaction, the quiet nod, is usually better than a loud one.

His car never moved from that spot. He didn't need a tow, didn't need to figure out how to extract the vehicle from a tight complex, and didn't need to wait for a dealer appointment. I walked in, got the job done, and walked back out to the street. The dealer comparison came up when he asked what this would have cost him there. I told him he saved a good chunk. He nodded again.
