The Outlander Key System Across Four Generations
First Generation (CU/CW)
First-gen Outlander runs a plain mechanical key with zero transponder and zero immobilizer. Turn it, the engine starts, done. No programming step, no electronics in the loop. Easiest and cheapest Outlander key Mitsubishi ever shipped, and any decent locksmith in San Diego can cut a fresh one from your VIN in under fifteen minutes.
Second Generation (CU/CW Facelift)
Second-gen brought the ID46 transponder and the NATS immobilizer. The car now talks to the key before it will fire the engine, and a wrong handshake means no crank. Three buttons on the head (lock, unlock, panic), standard cut blade, chip moulded into the plastic. Cutting takes minutes but programming requires Autel IM608, Smart Pro, or VVDI Key Tool Plus on the OBD-II port.
Third Generation (CX/CZ)
Push-button start arrives on the third gen. Smart-key fob with proximity detection, laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside, ID46 or ID47 chip onboard. NATS tightens up and the blade format jumps from standard cut to laser cut, which means a different machine on the truck. All-keys-lost paths exist for every year in this range.
Fourth Generation (DJ/DK)
Fourth gen keeps the smart-key form factor and tightens encryption underneath. Still ID46 or ID47, still push-button start, still a laser-cut emergency blade. Some 2023 PHEV trims may need server authentication on top of standard programming, which we flag honestly before the van leaves the shop in Hillcrest.
Identify Your Outlander Key
Plain metal blade, no chip, no remote buttons. Simplest Outlander key Mitsubishi ever shipped. Any San Diego locksmith can cut one in minutes, nothing to program.
Standard-cut blade with an ID46 chip moulded into the head plus three remote buttons. The car refuses to fire without the chip handshake against NATS, so professional OBD-II programming is mandatory.
Slim proximity smart key. Stay in your pocket, push the button, the engine catches. Laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside and an ID46 or ID47 chip onboard. OBD-II programming closes it out.
Same proximity-fob concept as the third gen with heavier encryption underneath. Still laser-cut emergency blade, still CR2032. Some 2023 PHEV trims need dealer-level server verification layered on top.
San Diego Pricing on an Outlander Key
Price covers the blank, cutting, programming, and on-vehicle testing. San Diego lockouts run $105 to $145.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Mitsubishi Dealer
Identical NATS programming, identical result, none of the tow bill and none of the three-day wait.
San Diego Outlander Key Problems We Knock Out
Smart Key Battery Depletion
Top reason behind every 'my key just quit' call. The CR2032 dies and the fob loses handshake with the car, so push-button start and remote lock/unlock die together. Drop a fresh cell; if that fails, the chip may have failed and we resolder or reflash.
OBD-II Programming Compatibility
First check on any 2007+ Outlander: is the tool talking to NATS? Mitsubishi NATS is proprietary and generic OBD-II scanners cannot hold the conversation past the security challenge. Autel IM608, Smart Pro, and FVDI2 live on the truck.
Transponder Chip Failure
Your 2007-2012 Outlander key has an ID46 chip in the head, and years in hot San Diego cars from Mira Mesa to Spring Valley cook those chips. Symptom looks like a dead battery: turn key, cranks, no fire. We cut and program a fresh chipped key on the spot.
Laser-Cut Blade Wear
Owners blame the smart-key fob when the real culprit is the worn emergency blade. On 2013+ Outlanders the laser-cut blade inside the fob wears with manual-unlock use. We re-cut just the blade on a Xhorse Dolphin, keep your fob, done in 20 minutes.
Can You Program an Outlander Key Yourself?
Remote-only DIY path. The DLC hazard-switch sequence enrolls lock, unlock, and panic. No transponder chip exists on this generation so the metal key itself just needs to be cut to fit your locks.
No DIY path. The ID46 transponder has to be programmed through the OBD-II port with professional diagnostic equipment that holds a real conversation with NATS.
No DIY path. Third-gen smart key requires professional OBD-II programming. No documented self-program sequence exists for this generation, the dealer and the locksmith both use the same toolset.
No DIY path. Advanced encryption and rolling codes block every DIY attempt on these years. Professional equipment is mandatory and some 2023 PHEV trims may need dealer server authentication layered on top.

San Diego Outlander Trivia
Mitsubishi locked in the Outlander VIN structure back in 2003 with WMI code JA4 for every Japan-built unit. The 10th digit of your VIN encodes the model year and cycles every 30 years, so technically a 2033 Outlander and a 2003 Outlander share that digit. Park them side by side in Del Mar and the only honest way to tell them apart is the key in your hand.
