A woman called me midmorning from a parking lot near the waterfront. Her 2010 Outlander had been sitting there since the night before. She'd noticed the fob acting up for a few days, range getting short, locking from halfway across the lot instead of all the way. Then it just stopped. The process takes a few minutes once you're connected, but you have to do it right -- the immobilizer won't accept a new fob without the proper enrollment sequence, and there's no shortcut built into this car's system.

She had a working key inside of 40 minutes. She mentioned she'd called the dealer first thing that morning. They could fit her in Thursday. She was standing in a parking lot on a Tuesday.

The dealer was an afterthought by the time I left. She was already back at work.
