Four eras define the answer. Pre-1996: plain metal keys with no chip inside, period. 1997 to 2009: transponder chip keys, sometimes paired with a separate remote fob, sometimes with the remote integrated into the head. 2010 to 2013: sidewinder flip keys with a laser-cut blade that folds into the fob body when not in use. 2014 forward: full proximity smart keys with push-button start. The fastest test from the driver seat: a Start/Stop button on the dashboard means smart key system.

Dealer pricing splits by key type. Transponder keys run $230 to $420. Proximity smart keys run $330 to $550. AKL on newer models adds a tow charge to either range. A $100 to $200 diagnostic fee usually lands on the invoice before any key work even starts. Battery first. Pull the back cover off, swap the CR2032, snap it shut, test. No reprogramming required after the swap. If the fresh cell does not solve it, the backup start method comes next, but the location of the backup pocket varies by model. Three to memorize: 2012 Verano hides the pocket under the cupholder in the center console. 2014 and newer LaCrosse puts it inside the armrest storage area. Encore GX and Envista use a depression at the rear of the center console tray. Place the fob in the right pocket with buttons facing up, press the brake firmly, push Start. If even that does not work, the next call is to us.

Almost always a failed sensor rather than an actual theft attempt. The 1990s through mid-2000s Buicks running GM's Passlock or VATS theft deterrent have a documented weakness in the Hall effect sensor inside the ignition tumbler. The sensor fails over time, the system reads the missing or scrambled signal as a tampered key, and the security light flashes while the engine refuses to start, even with the original factory key in hand. Diagnosis confirms which sensor is at fault, and the repair approach varies by platform; both happen at the car.

In many cases yes, which makes Buick unusual in the modern market. Most 2005 through 2020 Buicks support owner self-programming through a 30-minute timed security cycle, as long as you already have one working key in hand. The procedure requires specific ignition cycles and waiting for the security light to step through its sequence multiple times. AKL with no working key does not work through this method; professional tools are required for that scenario. Buick joined the relay-vulnerable club starting around 2010, when passive keyless entry became common across the lineup. The attack works the same way it does on every other affected brand: signal amplifiers extend the live fob proximity signal from inside the house out to wherever the car is parked, fooling the vehicle into unlocking. Nothing specific to Buick about it, but worth knowing if you own one. A Faraday pouch around the fob at home shuts the attack down. Older Buicks running VATS or Passlock are immune to relay attacks because those systems have no proximity component to exploit.
