About Buick Keys

Three things make Buick key service distinct from the rest of GM. One: the 30-minute timed security cycle lets owners add a spare key themselves on most 2005 through 2020 models, as long as one working key exists. Two: AKL with no working key still requires professional tools regardless of model year. Three: the backup fob pocket location changes by model, so a 2012 LaCrosse and a 2023 Envista both demand different driver-side knowledge. We handle all three scenarios at the car.
Buick Key Programming, Mobile-Routed Every Time

Walk the Buick timeline from the 1980s forward and four key generations show up. The VATS resistor pellet system came first, embedded in the blade itself. PK3 transponder chips followed in the late 1990s. Sidewinder flip keys took over for most of the 2010s. Full proximity smart keys cover the current Encore GX, Envision, and Enclave lineup. Every Buick built after 1996 requires a programmed key to crank, and the push-button models add a body control module pairing step before the fob is recognized at all.

What Wraps in a Single Mobile Visit
The toolkit covers all four eras from one van. Autel and GM-compatible programmers handle the data side: PIN extraction from the BCM, transponder writes, remote syncing. The HU100 sidewinder cutter handles the blade side for any flip-key or smart-key job. AKL on 2008 forward Buicks runs mobile with no tow required. The visit goes: VIN check, blade cut, programming, two working keys handed back. One stop, no second appointment.
Buick Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

The dealer math on a Buick key works out to $230 to $420 for a transponder key and $330 to $550 for a proximity smart key, with a flatbed required for AKL on anything built after 2010. A diagnostic fee usually gets stacked on top before any of that work begins. Our quote skips both the tow and the diagnostic fee because the truck arrives at the car already knowing what blank and procedure the VIN calls for.

Buick Key Fob Battery Guide

Opening the Shell

Which Cell, How Long It Lasts
The CR2032 covers every Buick fob in the modern lineup: Enclave, Encore, Encore GX, Envision, Envista, LaCrosse, Regal. No Buick model requires reprogramming after a battery swap. Cell life lands at one to three years depending on use. The bigger thing to memorize about Buick fobs is the location of the emergency backup pocket, which the brand moved across models. Even a dead battery does not strand you as long as the fob ends up in the right spot in the cabin. Locations sit in the FAQ above.
Pro Tip

Buick stands out from most of the modern lineup in one specific way: the brand actually supports owner self-programming on a wide range of model years. Most other makes lock that path entirely behind professional tools. Before assuming you need a dealer or a locksmith to add a spare key, the brand's own procedure may be available to you for free.

The Step-by-Step Procedure
The procedure on 2005 through 2020 Buicks goes like this. Requirements: one working key already paired to the car, and a new unprogrammed blank you have ordered or purchased. The sequence: cycle the ignition on and off, wait for the security light to run its full sequence three separate times, then follow the model-specific pairing steps printed in the owner's manual. The whole thing takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

When the Pro Path Wins on Time
Two caveats on the procedure. One: AKL with no working key at all does not work through the 30-minute cycle. That scenario requires professional tools no matter what. Two: even for add-key jobs where the cycle would technically work, our programmers compress that 30-minute wait down to roughly five minutes through direct BCM access. The choice is yours: half an hour in the car, or a five-minute mobile visit.
Buick Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
