How Buick Envision Keys Have Changed
1st Generation (C1XX)
Buick stepped into the compact SUV ring on this generation with a remote head key carrying a Texas 4D (ID44T) transponder. Standard turn-key cylinder, chip handshakes with GM PASS-Key III+ before the engine cranks. Higher trims could spec the proximity fob, but the base configuration is a three-button remote head, milled blade, CR2032 cell.
1st Generation Facelift (C1XX)
Security tightened with the facelift. Buick rolled out a proximity smart fob with push-to-start across more trims and upgraded the silicon to Texas Crypto (ID46), paired with GM Enhanced SKIM on the BCM side. Programming still rides OBD-II, but now needs a PIN read plus GM-specific software in the loop. DIY transponder pairing exits the conversation entirely.
2nd Generation (C3XX)
Completely fresh platform with GM SKIM IV on the immobilizer side and server-based authentication on the programming side. Smart fob runs ID46, push-to-start is standard, and some trims ditch the mechanical blade altogether. Pairing demands a live data connection to GM during the session, which stretches the on-site time and the bill, but our truck carries the kit for it.
Which Envision Fob Are You Holding?
Standard turn-key blade with buttons fused into the molded head. Drop it into the cylinder, twist, the transponder inside handshakes with the immobilizer on every cycle.
Proximity fob that lives in your pocket. The SUV picks it up as you approach, unlocks at the handle, lets you push the dash button to crank. An emergency blade hides inside the housing for the day the cell dies in your Encinitas garage.
Newest smart fob for the redesigned platform. Push-to-start across the board. Several trims skip the mechanical blade entirely, so a fresh CR2032 in the fob matters more than it used to.

Buick Envision Key Failures We Run On Most
Key Fob Battery Drain
Keyless Open on your Envision keeps the fob in constant chatter even when parked, chewing CR2032 cells faster than expected. Burning one every couple months? Marco recommends parking the fob ten feet from the vehicle overnight first.
Transponder Programming Failure
Your 2021+ Envision refuses any key unless the tool has current GM calibration and pulls the right PIN. Generic kit throws failure codes. Marco's Autel IM608 carries current GM adapter loads, landing first try in Hillcrest or Mira Mesa.
Keyless Start Intermittent
Owners assume a fresh battery fixes a push-to-start that only sometimes catches. On the 2024-2025 Envision, the actual culprit is the antenna module in the steering column or a degraded signal path. Marco scopes antenna strength before quoting.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
BCM sync status is the first diagnostic. If your 2017-2020 Envision cranks but refuses to fire after a battery disconnect or failed key attempt, the BCM and immobilizer dropped their handshake. Marco resyncs over OBD-II at the curb.
Can You Self-Program an Envision Key at Home?
Partial path only. You can add the remote keyless entry side using the GM ten-minute relearn if a working key already exists in your hand. That binds lock, unlock, and panic buttons only. The transponder chip itself, the part that actually authorizes the starter, still needs professional OBD-II pairing.
Zero DIY here. Enhanced SKIM on the 2021-2023 Envision needs professional diagnostic kit plus a BCM PIN to clear any new key. (619) 876-1271 and Marco handles it at your car.
The 2024-2025 Envision demands a live data connection into GM servers during pairing. Zero onboard procedure exists for any DIY workaround. Adds a bit of clock time over older generations, but the truck loads everything needed for the run.

Buick Trivia
Cross-market trivia: your Envision shares its platform with the Chinese-market Buick Envision S. Despite identical bones, the North American build runs GM's PASS-Key immobilizer family, lineage that actually traces back to security technology originally developed for Cadillac. So the gate on your starter carries some quietly luxurious DNA in its family tree.
