Equinox Keys Across 20 Years
1st Gen (GMT360): Transponder Key
First gen runs a simple transponder key with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip inside. No buttons on the key itself, no remote built in. You turn it in the ignition like any traditional key, but the chip has to match your Equinox's PK3+ immobilizer or it will not start. Programming runs through the OBD-II port, so this is not a hardware store key.
2nd Gen: Remote Head Key
Second gen Equinox stepped up to a remote head key with an ID46 transponder chip and three buttons baked right into the key head: lock, unlock, and trunk. Runs on a CR2032 battery and uses GM's PK3 immobilizer system. Programming is done on-board, which means faster service and lower cost.
3rd Gen: Smart Proximity Key
Third gen carries a Hitag 2 Extended (ID46E, NXP PCF7961E) smart key with push-button start and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside (FCC HYQ4AA). The Extended Immobilizer system requires server authentication through GM's network to program a new key. Adds a step, but we handle the server connection on-site so you never have to visit a dealer.
4th Gen (VSS-S): New Platform Smart Key
Your 2025 Equinox rides on GM's brand new VSS-S platform with an updated electrical architecture and immobilizer. This one currently requires dealer-only programming. We will tell you that upfront before rolling out, and we are tracking tool updates closely as aftermarket support develops.
Identify Your Equinox Key
1st-gen Equinox plastic-head remote key. PK3+ Philips Crypto 2 chip molded inside the head, 3-4 buttons (lock, unlock, panic, optional rear hatch), CR2032.
2nd-gen Equinox remote-head with Hitag2 chip. Same general shape, different chip family. 4 buttons standard, CR2032.
3rd-gen Equinox (2018+) proximity smart fob. Hitag2 Extended ID46E, push-button start, hidden valet blade tucks inside.
Similar fob design to the 2018-2024, but built on GM's new VSS-S architecture. The immobilizer and programming requirements are different under the hood.

Equinox Problems We Fix Most
Equinox No-Start with Security Light Lit
PK3+ chip lost sync to the BCM after a deep voltage drop or ignition cylinder weakening. Engine spins, no fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, recode the chip, swap the cylinder if needed, you keep driving.
Fob Battery Burn
Equinox cylinders past 100K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. Symptoms: intermittent no-start, key catching, eventual full failure. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to the existing key.
Immobilizer Sync Drop
3rd-gen Equinox proximity fobs lose pairing to the BCM after some firmware updates. Push-start fails, fob not detected. We rerun the BCM pairing curbside.
Proximity Sensor Fault
Push-button start on 2018-2025 Equinox uses cabin antennas to detect the smart key. When one fails, the car cannot sense the fob in your hand. We diagnose fob, antenna, or sensor module before assuming you need a new key.
Equinox DIY: What You Can Actually Do
1st-gen Equinox (2005-2009) fob buttons resync on-board via the door switch sequence after CR2032 swap. The PK3+ chip itself needs OBD scanner programming, full stop.
2nd-gen Equinox (2010-2017) Hitag2 chips need OBD scanner pairing. Fob proximity functions can be resynced on-board after battery change.
3rd-gen Equinox (2018+) Hitag2 Extended ID46E needs scanner plus GM Techline SPS PIN for all-keys-lost. Add-key with one working fob skips the PIN and runs about 25 minutes curbside.
The new VSS-S platform currently requires dealer-level access for key programming. No aftermarket tools support it yet. We will update this as the tooling catches up.

Equinox Security History
Quietly significant Equinox detail: the 2005 launch year was when GM finally retired the last vestiges of VATS resistor-pellet thinking on compact SUVs and moved to its PKM transponder system. That same chip philosophy then evolved into the PK3+ Hitag2 Extended setup the 3rd-gen Equinox still uses today. One platform marked the end of resistor-pellet security across GM's compact SUV lineup.
