I was working the Poway Business Park area on a Tuesday when a call came in from a guy who had just gotten back to his 2005 Chevrolet Equinox after a long shift. His fob had been acting up for a couple weeks, and that morning it quit entirely. Doors would not respond at all. He had the key blade to get in and start the car, but the remote was dead and he had a second driver in the family who needed a working spare anyway.
He was parked in one of the surface lots off Community Road, which put me about eight minutes out.
When I got there, he had already swapped the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move. New battery, correct type, still nothing. I opened the fob shell and found one of the battery contact tabs had taken a set and was barely touching the cell. That explained the gradual failure over those two weeks, not a sudden death. Bent the tab back, reseated the battery, and the original fob came back right there in the parking lot.
He still wanted a spare programmed for the other driver, which was the real job. The 2005 Equinox has an onboard remote programming mode. You cycle through a specific sequence using the door lock and the ignition, the system enters program mode, and you press a button on each fob you want registered. I walked through the sequence, the doors cycled to confirm each fob was accepted, and both remotes tested clean on all three buttons including the trunk release.
Total time in the lot was about 20 minutes. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a fee just to add the spare. I did not need to say anything after that.
