Early F-Body VATS
1995 Camaro runs a VATS resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. No transponder chip, no remote fob; just a metal key with a tiny resistor that the ignition reads every turn. Resistance value off from one of 15 possible codes and the car will not start.
VATS Plus Remote Entry
1996-1997 Camaro kept the same VATS resistor pellet, but GM added a 3-button keyless entry fob (lock, unlock, trunk) running on a CR2032. Fob handles doors and trunk, immobilizer is still the resistor talking to the cylinder.
Late F-Body VATS, On-Board Fob Sync
1998-2002 Camaro carries the same VATS resistor key and CR2032 3-button fob, plus an on-board fob programming sequence GM finally exposed to owners (radio fuse pulled, ignition cycled, lock-and-unlock held). VATS itself stayed pure resistance matching, zero OBD.

VATS Failure / No Start
We measure the resistor pellet in your key blade with an ohmmeter. Over time the pellet wears or the cylinder contacts corrode, and the car refuses to start. We match the value from 15 possible codes and cut a fresh VATS key on the spot.
Fob Battery Drain / Phantom Alarms
Random horn alarms usually trace to a weak CR2032 in the fob or a timing issue: unlock the door but do not get the key into the ignition fast enough, and the factory alarm reads it as a break-in. Fresh battery plus a fob reprogram usually solves it.
Lost VATS Key Code
Security light flashing on the Camaro, engine refuses to fire. Nobody knows which of 15 VATS resistance values the car expects. We ohm-meter the value off your key, or read it straight off the VATS module if every key is gone. Cut happens curbside.
Camaro Programming: What You Can Do, What You Cannot
You can syncthe 1995 fob via the on-board ignition cycle: ignition on, hold lock and unlock for 8 seconds, fob beep. The VATS resistor pellet on the blade itself? That part needs an ohmmeter and the right cut blank, which is our gear.
Remote fob programming is doable at home by pulling the radio fuse and cycling the ignition three times within five seconds. Timing matters, and a missed step means starting over. The VATS key still needs pro resistance matching and cutting.
Same radio fuse removal and ignition cycling method as the 1996-1997 models. You can program up to four remotes, but adding a new one erases all existing remote codes, so have every fob you want to use ready at the same time. VATS key itself still needs pro cutting and resistance matching.

Here is the wild part about VATS: GM patented it for the Corvette back in 1986 as one of the very first electronic immobilizers ever fitted to a production car, and it survived essentially unchanged on the F-body all the way through the 2002 Camaro. Fifteen resistor values, no chip, no RF, no crypto, just a tiny pellet that the cylinder reads as a resistance check. By the time your Camaro left Sainte-Therese in Quebec, the same basic tech was still on the job.
