1997 Chevrolet Camaro Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Santaluz who had just flown back into town, taken the shuttle to the economy lot, and found himself standing next to his 1997 Camaro with no working key. He had a copy made at a hardware store years ago, carried it as a spare, and that was the one he had on him. It would not turn the ignition. The original was sitting on a hook at home.

He had already called a tow company before he called me.

I drove out to the lot, took a look at the copy, and it was obvious right away. Hardware store cuts on older GM keys get sloppy after enough use, especially when the original being copied is already worn. The spare had a couple of peaks that were cut just shallow enough to skip over tumblers instead of lifting them cleanly. The lock cylinder was not going to cooperate.

I decoded the door lock, cut a fresh key to the actual bitting of the car, and had him turning the ignition inside of twenty minutes. He canceled the tow on the spot.

He mentioned the dealer was going to be a two-day wait just for an appointment. The fresh cut cost him a fraction of what that tow alone would have run.
