Pre-SS Models
Remote head key with a B111PT Circle Plus transponder chip and GM Passlock II immobilizer. Standard blade, three buttons, CR2032 battery. Programming is done on-board, which means no expensive dealer software needed.
SS Performance Models
Remote head key with the same B111PT Circle Plus chip as the base models. GM kept the Passlock II system across the lineup, so the turbocharged SS uses the exact same key and programming procedure. Blade just needs to be cut before programming begins.
Panel Van Models
Remote head key with the B111PT Circle Plus transponder, identical to the passenger versions. Panel model added keyless entry remote availability, but the core transponder system stayed the same Passlock II setup. Nothing changed under the hood security-wise.
Facelift Models
Remote head key still running the B111PT Circle Plus chip on Passlock II. Chevy refreshed the exterior but left the immobilizer alone. These later models are known for ignition switch wear, which can cause security light issues that look like a key problem but are not.
Identify Your HHR Key
HHR remote-head key. Plastic head with Philips Crypto 2 PK3+ chip molded inside, 3-4 buttons (lock, unlock, panic, optional rear hatch), CR2032.
HHR SS variant key. Same PK3+ chip and B111PT blade as the base model. Performance variant got zero security upgrades.
Emergency steel blade cut without the chip. Opens the door, will not start the engine. Useful only for trunk access if you locked the chipped key inside.
Refreshed HHR kept the same key design. If your key has a thick plastic head with three buttons and a standard blade, this is what you have.

HHR No-Start After Battery Swap
BCM on the 2006-2011 HHR can lose its learned key sync after a deep voltage drop. Engine cranks, no fire, security light glares. We rerun the 30-minute key learn through OBD or run the on-board ritual, you drive away.
Ignition Switch Quits
HHR cylinders past 80K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. Symptoms: intermittent no-start, key catching, eventual full failure. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to existing keys.
Transponder Chip Sync Drop
NHTSA recall 14V-047 covers the HHR ignition switch problem alongside Cobalt. Cylinder slips out of RUN under knee bump or heavy keychain, kills airbags and assist. We install the recall part and recode curbside.
HHR DIY: How Far Can You Get
The 30-minute on-board Passlock II relearn works on every 2006-2011 HHR. Ignition on, wait 10 minutes for security light to extinguish, ignition off for 5 seconds, repeat three times. No scanner needed.
Spare-key path: with one working chipped key already in hand, the BCM accepts a second key via the same on-board ritual. Cutting the new B111PT blank is the part you cannot DIY without a working sample.
