How the G5 Key System Evolved
1st Generation (Delta Platform)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your G5 uses a Texas 4D (ID45) transponder chip inside a standard blade key with three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. We plug into your OBD-II port, pull the PIN from the BCM, and program the chip to your PASS-Key III+ immobilizer right at the curb.
1st Generation Facelift
Out of the van in San Diego, this is how it shakes out. OBD-II programming keeps things simple here too. GM gave the G5 minor styling updates for 2009, but the key system is identical: Texas 4D (ID45) chip, standard blade, three-button remote, PASS-Key III+ immobilizer. Same tools, same process, same result as the earlier years.
1st Generation Final Year
For San Diego owners, here is the situation. On-board programming wraps up the G5's run. The 2010 is the last Pontiac G5 ever made, and it carries the same Texas 4D (ID45) transponder chip and PASS-Key III+ system as every G5 before it. The only difference is that DIY relearn procedures are not confirmed for this year, so professional OBD-II programming is the way to go.
Which Key Does Your G5 Use?
A standard metal key with a chunky head that holds both the transponder chip and a three-button remote. The chip talks to your car's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition.
Identical key as the earlier G5 models. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk, with a Texas 4D chip inside the key head head that your car checks before it lets you start.
From Tierrasanta to El Cajon, here is what holds. Identical key to every other G5 year. Standard blade, three-button remote, CR2032 battery for the remote functions, and a transponder chip that requires professional programming for this final model year.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $105-$145 if you are locked out. Done on-site anywhere in San Diego County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Pontiac Dealers
Roughly half what a Mission Valley dealer would have quoted before Pontiac shut down, no tow truck, and Marco's van actually stocks the B111-PT blanks the dealer parts counter has not seen since 2011.
Common Pontiac G5 Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
G5 owners assume a fresh key is defective when it turns but the engine refuses to crank. The chip was never paired to the PK3+ immobilizer. The transponder has to be programmed to the BCM via on-board relearn or tool. Marco confirms sync with Autel IM608 in SD.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check on a G5 with a dead remote is the CR2032, but if you are replacing every few weeks, that is not normal. The 2007-2009 fobs are known for constant signal polling that drains batteries quick, on GT trims with heated mirrors. Marco tests the fob's current draw on-site to confirm battery vs board.
Door Cylinder Actuator Wear
The actuator motor inside the door is wearing out. common power-lock failure on 2008-2010 G5 coupes with higher mileage in SD. Remote works for one door not the other. Mechanical issue, not a key or fob problem, so Marco will let you know upfront when you need a mechanic not a locksmith.
Can You Program a G5 Key Yourself?
Yes, the 2007-2009 G5 supports GM's on-board relearn procedure. You need a correctly cut transponder key, then run three 10-minute-30-second ignition cycles watching the security light. Timing is critical, and this erases all previously programmed keys. If you already have one working key, there is a shorter add-key procedure too. If the timing goes wrong, wait at least an hour before retrying to avoid a BCM lockout.
No confirmed DIY procedure exists for the 2010 G5. This final model year requires a professional scan tool for transponder programming. Call Marco at (619) 876-1271 and Marco will handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
The G5 is one of GM's cleanest badge-engineering jobs. Same Delta platform, same PK3+ immobilizer, same Ilco B111-PT key blank, even the same internal lock wafers as the Chevrolet Cobalt. A locksmith who handles Cobalts can cross-cut G5 keys without thinking about it, because the two cars roll off the same Lordstown assembly line with nothing but the front fascia, badges, and a tail panel to tell them apart. Pontiac sold the G5 from 2007 to 2010, then the whole brand died in GM's bankruptcy. Marco still sees these regularly between Mira Mesa and Chula Vista.
