A call came in from a guy out in Harbison Canyon, off one of those long canyon roads where you really do not want to be stuck. He had one key for his 2009 G5 and had been meaning to get a spare cut for about two years. Then the original disappeared somewhere between his truck bed and his back door, and suddenly the two-year errand became an emergency.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and expect to wait. He was not thrilled about that, especially since the car was parked and usable up until the moment the key walked off.

I drove out to him in Alpine. The G5 was sitting in his driveway, doors unlocked because he had been smart enough not to lock it once he realized the key was gone. All-keys-lost on this generation means the immobilizer needs a proper reset before it will accept anything new, so I connected to the OBD port under the dash, ran the reset sequence, and let it do its thing.

Cut the new key to his vehicle. Programmed the transponder chip. Tested it in the ignition, let it idle for a minute to confirm the immobilizer was not going to cut the engine, then locked and unlocked the door mechanically to confirm the blade fit was right.

He asked me to cut a second one on the spot so he would not be back in this situation. Smart move. Did it right there in the driveway.

The whole job was done before the dealer would have even confirmed his appointment. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him and never had to leave the canyon.
