I got a call out to Buena Creek in Vista on a Tuesday morning. The owner had a 2008 G5 sitting in his driveway, wouldn't start. He'd had a spare key made at a hardware kiosk a few weeks earlier and figured it was fine because it turned the ignition. That day it stopped working completely.
The kiosk key was the problem. It was cut correctly, fit the cylinder, turned fine. But it had no transponder chip at all. Just a plain metal blank. It worked until the original key got lost, and then there was nothing left that the immobilizer would accept.

I pulled up with everything in the van. Right key blank with the correct transponder, my cutting machine, and the programming gear. Did the whole job in the driveway. Cut the blade to his locks, programmed the chip to the vehicle's immobilizer, verified the car started and idled normally.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, and the car was running before lunch.
The kiosk thing comes up more than people expect. It looks like a key. It works in the door, works in the ignition. You don't find out it has no chip until the day you actually need it.
