How Solstice Keys Changed Over the Years
Base Model Transponder Key - San Diego
On a base Solstice uses a standard blade transponder key with a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote, no battery. You turn it in the ignition and the Pass-Key III+ system reads the chip before it lets the engine start. Simple, reliable, and straightforward to replace on-site.
GXP High-Security Key - San Diego
On a GXP uses the same Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip as the base model, but the blade is a high-security cut. That means a standard key machine cannot duplicate it. The van carries specialized cutters on every truck that handle the GXP's B99 profile, so Marco cuts it right at the curb.
Remote Head Key - San Diego
On a Solstice with the integrated remote has a 3-button remote head key. It still uses the Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip and Pass-Key III+ immobilizer, but the remote functions, lock, unlock, and trunk, are built into the key head. Uses a CR2032 battery and requires OBD-II programming for the remote portion.
Which Key Does Your Solstice Use?
Out of the van in San Diego, this is how it shakes out. A metal key with a thick plastic head. No buttons, no battery. The transponder chip is hidden inside the head and communicates with your ignition when you turn it.
Out of the van in San Diego, this is how it shakes out. Looks similar to the base key but the blade has a more complex cut pattern. This high-security profile requires a specialized cutter that most hardware stores do not have.
Across San Diego County, here is the deal. A chunkier key with three buttons built into the head for lock, unlock, and trunk. The transponder chip and remote electronics are all in one unit.
Solstice Key Cost Breakdown
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location. Done on-site anywhere in San Diego County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Pontiac Dealers
Roughly half what a Mission Valley dealer would have quoted before Pontiac folded, no tow, and Marco actually carries the Philips ID46 transponders the dealer parts counter has been backordered on since the brand died in 2010.
Common Solstice Key Problems
PK3+ Sync Failure
First diagnostic on a Solstice no-start: whether the Pass-Key III+ system recognizes the Philips ID46 transponder. A weak 12V, jump start, or BCM glitch can knock sync. Engine cranks, never fires, security light solid. Marco confirms with Autel IM608 in SD, re-syncs the existing key or programs a fresh ID46.
High-Security Blade Wear (GXP)
From Pacific Beach to El Cajon, GXP owners blame the ignition when the problem is a worn blade. The high-security B99 profile wears faster than a standard cut, and once depths are off by thousandths the ignition will not turn smoothly. Marco measures and cuts a fresh one on-site.
Immobilizer BCM Fault
Your Solstice will not start, theft light solid. Usually a BCM fault, not a bad key. The BCM is the brain behind Pass-Key III+, and when it fails it locks out every key. Marco reads the PIN from the module and reprograms your keys in Chula Vista or El Cajon.
Can You Program a Solstice Key Yourself?
For San Diego owners, here is the situation. The base and GXP transponder keys can be programmed using GM's on-board 10-minute relearn procedure. You cycle the key to ON for about 10 minutes and 30 seconds, repeat three times, and the new key registers. Timing is critical, and a mistake can lock you out, but it is technically possible without tools.
When you already have a working key, the 2006-2007 models let you add a new transponder key by starting the engine, removing the original, and inserting the new key within 10 seconds. quick and simple when it works.
There's no on-board procedure for programming the remote buttons on your Solstice key fob. The lock, unlock, and trunk buttons require OBD-II programming with professional tools. That is where we come in.

Did You Know?
The Pontiac Solstice shares its Kappa platform with the Saturn Sky and the Opel GT. All three roadsters rolled off GM's Wilmington, Delaware assembly line on the same architecture, with the same Philips ID46 (PCF7936) transponder system and essentially interchangeable key hardware. Three nameplates, one engineering family, and a locksmith who handles any one of them can cross-key the other two without breaking a sweat. Marco sees Solstice and Sky calls between Solana Beach and Encinitas regularly, often on the same week.
