About Hyundai Keys

The whole Hyundai job hinges on one number: the 6-digit PIN buried in the ECM. Pull it through OBD-II, the immobilizer accepts whatever keys you teach it. Skip that step, nothing happens. We park behind your Tucson in a Mira Mesa cul-de-sac or a Chula Vista lot, plug in, pull the PIN, cut the blank, and the Sonata, Santa Fe, Palisade, or Elantra fires.
How Hyundai Keys Get Made Outside the Dealer

Two architectures cover the entire post-1990s Hyundai lineup. Transponder-only models from the late 1990s forward need a chip paired to the immobilizer to fire the engine. Anything with push-button start layers a 6-digit PIN authentication on top of that pairing, where the fob has to match the vehicle's immobilizer through a specific OBD-II sequence. Three programmers handle either path: OBDStar X300 for older transponder work, Xhorse Mini OBD for fast smart-key duplicates, and Autel IM608 for full all-keys-lost on 2007 through 2024 platforms. Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Elantra, Sonata, all of them get programmed at the car.

Check the VIN Before Anything Else
Before any new keys get programmed on a 2011 to 2022 key-start Hyundai, run the VIN through Hyundai's anti-theft site. Two free fixes may be available: a software update that adds an ignition kill when the fob locks the car, and a hardware fix that adds a zinc-reinforced sleeve around the ignition cylinder. Both at zero cost through a Hyundai dealer. We can check the VIN with you on the call before we dispatch so the dealer side is handled in parallel with our key work.
Security Notice for Hyundai Owners

Not every 2011-2022 Hyundai in your driveway is at risk, and the distinction is worth getting right before you panic-shop a steering wheel club. The vulnerability is configuration-specific: only US-market key-start models from those years shipped without an electronic immobilizer, which is what made them startable with basic tools after a steering column compromise. Push-button start Hyundais from the same model years carry factory immobilizers as part of the smart key system itself and were never part of the viral trend.

What Hyundai Standardized Going Forward
From November 2021 onward every new US-market Hyundai ships with an electronic immobilizer as a baseline feature, no trim exceptions. Anything you buy new from a San Diego County Hyundai dealer today has it built in.

Check the VIN Today, Schedule the Free Work
If your driveway has a 2011-2022 key-start Hyundai, the first move is free. Type the VIN into Hyundai's anti-theft site. Two no-cost items are likely waiting through the dealer: the software update extends the alarm to one full minute and adds an ignition kill that engages when you lock with the fob, and the hardware fix adds a zinc-reinforced sleeve around the ignition cylinder. Knock both out before spending anything on an aftermarket solution.
Hyundai Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Run the numbers: $500-plus for a Tucson or Santa Fe smart key at any San Diego County Hyundai dealer, plus $150 to $250 in programming labor stacked on transponder jobs. Mobile shops with Hyundai-specific PIN-read tools advertise up to 75 percent off those rates. The table above is our flat pricing: blank, cut, programming, one mobile visit, one bill. Backed by over 100 five-star Google reviews from San Diego County customers.

What to Do When Your Hyundai Fob Dies

The mechanical blade lives inside the fob. Find the small release button on the face or back, press and hold. On certain Hyundai models you need to press the button and pull the key ring end of the fob at the same time to free the blade.

The driver door keyhole hides differently depending on the year. Older Hyundais leave it exposed at the back of the door handle. Newer models tuck it under a small plastic cap that pops off when you slide the blade tip under the edge. A few models park the keyhole in the center of the handle or above the door itself, only visible once you pull the handle to the open position.

Unlock the door with the blade and climb in. Expect Key not detected or Press start button with key on the dash when the fob isn't being recognized at normal range.

The backup start path depends on the model year and trim. On most 2013 and newer push-start Hyundais, press the dead fob flat against the Start/Stop button itself while holding the brake; the button reads the transponder chip passively without any battery power. On 2011 through 2013 Sonata Hybrids the path is different: pop open the center console lid, find the slot, slide the mechanical key in until the chime, then press start. Other models hide a fob insertion slot at the front of the center console, behind the driver's door above the console, or on the left side of the glovebox. Worth looking it up in the manual today, not at 11 PM in a Carlsbad parking lot.
Hyundai Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
