Kona Electric Key Security, Generation by Generation
First Generation (DE)
You press a button to start this car, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes when you do. Your 2020 Kona Electric uses a proximity smart key with a Hyundai immobilizer system and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Programming requires PIN extraction and dealer-level diagnostic tools, which we carry on every service call.

Your first-gen Kona Electric uses a proximity smart key with a Hyundai immobilizer system and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Programming requires PIN extraction and dealer-level diagnostic tools, which we carry on every service call.
Second Generation (SX2)
The redesigned SX2 Kona Electric runs a proximity smart key with a HITAG-AES chip, a step up in encryption from the first generation. You still walk up, grab the handle, and push to start, with a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside the fob. Programming uses PIN extraction and our latest diagnostic tooling, carried on every call.
What Key Does Your Kona Electric Actually Use?
This is the slim fob that stays in your pocket. You walk up, grab the door handle, and press the push-button start. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside for manual door entry if the fob battery dies.

The second-gen SX2 fob looks and works like the first, slim, proximity, push-button start, with a hidden emergency blade. Under the shell it carries the FCC TQ8-FOB-4F61M43 part and a HITAG-AES chip, so it needs our newer tooling and PIN extraction to program.

Problems We See on the Hyundai Kona Electric
Smart Key Battery Depletion
Cold-morning push-button starts go intermittent. A marginal CR2032 that worked at 70 yesterday is borderline at 45 in a foggy Carlsbad driveway. Press the fob nose directly against the start button. Then swap the battery or call Marco for a relearn.
Immobilizer Authentication Failures
Plenty of people think their smart key broke after a 12V replacement. It did not. The Hyundai immobilizer lost sync with the key's transponder. We handle the diagnostic relearn on-site with PIN extraction, no tow to the dealer.
Valet Key Functionality
The hidden emergency blade inside your smart key is for door entry only. It will not start the car because the Kona Electric needs the proximity fob's transponder signal. If your fob dies, hold it against the start button. That is Hyundai's backup.
Can You Program a Kona Electric Key on Your Own?
No DIY option here. The 2020 Kona Electric smart key requires professional OBD programming with PIN code extraction. All existing keys get erased during the process and must be reprogrammed together, with a maximum of two keys per vehicle.

A Quick Note
When 2020 rolled around,, Hyundai did something unusual with the Kona Electric. They gave it a 150 kW electric motor putting out 201 horsepower, but they also added regenerative braking paddle shifters on the steering wheel. That made it one of the first Hyundai models to integrate EV-specific driving controls directly into the steering column, blurring the line between the key and ignition system and the driving experience itself.
