2020 Hyundai Kona Electric Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A Del Mar Heights resident called me on a weekday afternoon. She had driven her 2020 Kona Electric home from a charging stop, gone inside, and come back out to a fob that would not unlock the doors.
The key still flipped out and physically turned the ignition, but the remote buttons were dead and she was getting a warning on the dash that the system wasn't seeing the key correctly.
She had already swapped the CR2032 herself. New battery, same problem. That told me it wasn't the battery.
I met her in her driveway. First thing I did was check the fob internals. The battery contact had a slight outward bow on it, the kind that happens when someone pries the case open with a screwdriver instead of a proper tool. The new battery was sitting in there but barely making contact. I bent the clip back, reseated the battery, and snapped the case correctly.
Remote functions came right back. Doors, trunk release, the works.
But the immobilizer warning was still showing, which meant the chip enrollment had dropped, probably from a low-voltage event when the contact failed. I connected my programmer through the OBD port, verified the key was properly paired to the vehicle's security system, and cleared the fault. She cycled the ignition twice to confirm a clean start with no warnings.
The whole job was maybe forty minutes in her driveway in Del Mar Heights. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a multi-day turnaround and a cost that made her wince. She did not need a new fob at all.
