Azera Key Security, Generation by Generation
TG, 1st Gen Facelift
Moderate security with the Hyundai Immobilizer system, but nothing too complicated. Your key is a 3-button remote head with an ID46 transponder chip inside, which means the car checks the chip every time you turn the ignition. Programming is done on-board, so we handle it right at your car without any dealer server connection.
HG, 2nd Gen
This is where security got serious. Well, actually, Hyundai kept it pretty similar to the first gen. You still have a 3-button remote head key with an ID46 chip and on-board programming. The platform changed to HG, but the key system stayed familiar, which is good news for your wallet.
HG, 2nd Gen Facelift
Hyundai made a real jump here. Your Azera now uses a 4-button smart key with an ID47 transponder chip and push-button start. Programming requires OBD-II access, meaning we plug into your car's diagnostic port and write the key to the immobilizer. More advanced security, but we carry the tools to handle it on every call.
What Key Does Your Azera Actually Use?
A traditional metal key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the car and use the buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk.
Same concept as the earlier generation. Metal blade goes in the ignition, three buttons on the fob handle your locks and trunk.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. The car detects it when you walk up, and you press a button on the dash to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.

Problems We See on the Hyundai Azera
Security Light Confusion
Hyundai wired the 2006-2011 Azera immobilizer indicator backwards from most cars shipped that decade. Light glowing means the key talks to the ECU. Light dark means it does not. Calls into Rancho Bernardo or Spring Valley check out fine.
Transponder Programming Failures
We check the ignition cycle sequence first on 2006-2014 models. On-board programming requires a precise series of steps, and if timing slips or the sequence is off by one step, the key will not learn. Most failures trace to a weak car battery.
Smart Key Battery Drain
On the 2015-2017 facelift, the proximity antennas keep polling the fob when parked. Leave the key on a shelf near a Carlsbad garage wall and the CR2032 is flat by week's end. Park the key fifteen feet from the car and swap CR2032s on a schedule.
Fob Button Wear
People think their remote lost programming when the lock button quits. Real problem is the rubber membrane under the buttons degrading. We replace the shell and transfer your internals, or set up a complete new fob if the board is fine.
Can You Program a Azera Key on Your Own?
Technically possible using a PIN code derived from your VIN and a diagnostic tool, but this is not a simple DIY job. You need scan tool access to the vehicle's special functions menu. Most owners call us because the equipment alone costs more than the service.
You can program the remote buttons with a professional scan tool, but the transponder chip still requires professional equipment and PIN code access. The remote-only procedure needs a DLC connection and precise timing. Not a kitchen-table project.
No self-programming option exists for these smart keys. The ID47 chip and push-button start system require OBD-II programming with dealer-level tools. Call us at (619) 876-1271 and we handle it on-site at the vehicle.

One More Thing
You would not guess it, but the 2006 Azera's immobilizer security light works completely backwards compared to almost every other car. It lights up when a valid, programmed key is in the ignition and goes dark when an uncut or unprogrammed key is inserted. Hyundai engineers apparently decided to flip the script on that one, and it has been confusing owners and locksmiths alike ever since.
