Q: How long should a replacement fob last on a 2013 Azera?

The programming itself does not expire. The CR2032 in these typically runs a couple of years under normal use. What actually wears out is the physical housing. 2013 Hyundai Azera Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from the Grossmont Area on a Tuesday around 6:30 in the evening. The woman was in an overflow lot by a pediatrician's office off Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa.

Her kid had spiked a fever at the appointment and she needed to get home. Her 2013 Hyundai Azera would not start. The fob was not being recognized at all, and the backup procedure where you hold the fob against the start button was not working either.

The Hyundai dealer was already closed.

I was about 20 minutes out. She had a sick child strapped into the back seat and no options besides waiting.

When I got there I opened the fob first, before touching the diagnostic port. The CR2032 was still reading voltage but the contact inside had a visible greenish tint at the corner, early corrosion where moisture had gotten in through a small crack in the housing. The chip was not transmitting reliably because of it. That explained why even the backup hold-to-start was inconsistent.

I connected my programmer to the OBD port, replaced the fob with a verified blank cut and programmed to the car, and walked every function: door handles, start, lock and unlock cycle. Then I walked her through the backup start hold procedure so she actually knew how to use it if a fob ever went low again. That part matters.

From her call to the engine running was 44 minutes. She got her kid home.

I do not lead with dealer comparisons on calls like that. There was a sick child involved and she just needed her car to move. But she mentioned later that the dealer had quoted her a wait until the following morning plus a price that was well over what she paid me. Sometimes the value of a mobile locksmith is not convenience. It is that the car runs tonight.
