I was parked on North Broadway in Escondido when the call came in. Guy had the Azera sitting in a lot off the same street, about a quarter mile from where I was already working.
He had a spare key, but it had been rattling around in a drawer for years and had a crack running through the plastic head. He used it to get there, but he told me it was hit or miss on the first try every morning and he wanted a reliable replacement before it failed completely.
I pulled up, looked at what he had, and got to work on-site. The key blade on these is a standard edge-cut profile, so cutting a new one to match the original is clean work. The bigger part is programming the transponder chip to the immobilizer. Once that pairing is confirmed, the car starts without hesitation.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, arms crossed, skeptical in that reasonable way people get when a truck pulls up instead of a dealership.
The Azera fired right up. He turned it off and started it again twice just to be sure.
He had mentioned he called the dealer first. They needed the car brought in, could not get him in until later in the week, and the quote was the kind of number that makes you pause. I was done in his lot before he would have even had the appointment confirmed.
