Relay theft uses two amplifier devices working in tandem to extend your fob's RF signal from inside the house out to the truck in the driveway. The car thinks the fob is in range, unlocks, and starts, and the physical key never leaves the kitchen counter. Start at the battery. Every current Land Rover proximity fob runs a CR2032, the cell lasts two to three years under typical use, and inland San Diego County heat shortens that. If a correct fresh CR2032 does not bring the fob back, the next suspect on a 2020 through 2024 Defender is the Keyless Vehicle Module fuse, which has a documented failure pattern in position 57. If both checks come up clean, the remaining possibility is a lost vehicle-to-fob sync, which requires a reprogram. We work through that sequence on the call before recommending a visit.

Yes. Press the fob flat against the push-to-start button while your foot is on the brake, then push start as normal. The proximity antenna reads the fob's passive transponder without any battery power at all. Some chassis also have a backup detection spot near the steering column. Once the engine is running, change the CR2032 as soon as you can: hit the side release to pop the emergency blade out, pry the housing at the seam with a coin, and swap the cell. No reprogramming after a battery change.
