LR3 Key: Dealer vs. Mobile Locksmith
A Land Rover dealer in San Diego County typically charges $350 to $500 or more for a smart key replacement. We do the same work at your location for 40 to 60 percent less, and you don't have to tow the vehicle anywhere.

Can You Program an LR3 Key Yourself?
Land Rover LR3 (certain configurations): self-programming is not available. These require OBD-II programming along with a security PIN pulled from the vehicle's computer. A professional locksmith or dealer with the right equipment is required.
Land Rover LR3 (other configurations): the smart key communication on this model is encrypted and requires server-authenticated programming. No on-board DIY method exists for these vehicles.
Land Rover LR3 (select years): a basic key-learning procedure is supported on some versions. Insert a working key, turn to RUN, and wait ten minutes for the security light to go off. Turn the ignition off, immediately insert the new key, turn to RUN, and wait another ten minutes. Repeat once more. Three ten-minute cycles in total. This only applies to specific configurations, so confirm before attempting.

Common Land Rover LR3 Key Issues
Stolen LR3 Key - What to Do Now
A stolen LR3 key that was already programmed can still start your vehicle. The right move is to have all existing keys erased from the factory immobilizer as quickly as possible. We come to your location in San Diego County, reprogram only the keys you physically have, and deactivate the stolen one so it can no longer be used.
Existing Key Stopped Working After a New One Was Programmed
On some LR3 vehicles, adding a new key can erase other keys already stored in the immobilizer memory. This is why every key should be present during the programming session. If one was left out, it will need to be reprogrammed to work again.
Cracked or Broken LR3 Fob Shell
The plastic housing on an LR3 fob can crack from drops or everyday wear. Once the shell breaks, the internal circuit board is exposed to moisture and further damage. We can transfer your existing electronics into a new shell at your location without losing your programming.
Which Key Does Your LR3 Have?
If you're unsure which key type your Land Rover LR3 uses, the easiest check is to look at your current fob and compare it to the descriptions below. You can also share your VIN with us and we'll identify the correct key before we ever leave our shop.
The fully equipped LR3 fob with lock, unlock, trunk release, remote start, and panic. Found on top-trim LR3s that came with every available key feature from the factory.
A mechanical key with a transponder chip inside but no remote buttons. The vehicle won't start without a chip that's been programmed to match the factory immobilizer. Remote functions aren't built in, but a separate fob can be added if needed.
Land Rover LR3 Key History
Flip Key Era
Early in the LR3's run, Land Rover moved away from a traditional fixed-blade key toward a flip-style design. The blade folds into the fob body, combining the remote and mechanical key into a single unit that's easier to carry in a pocket.
Integrated Fob Design
Land Rover later brought all key functions together into one fob for the LR3. Remote locking, proximity entry, trunk release, and remote start were handled by a single unit with no separate pieces to keep track of.
All-Electronic Era
Physical key functions were removed entirely on some LR3 configurations. Vehicle access and starting became fully electronic, relying on proximity entry and push-button start, with phone-based backup as an option.
Current Generation
The latest LR3 key uses the strongest encryption available on this model line. Programming requires up-to-date dealer-grade equipment. We keep our tools current and complete this work at your location in San Diego County.
