Which key does your LR2 have?
A rectangular proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your LR2 detects it when you approach, unlocks when you grab the handle, and starts when you push the button. Nothing gets inserted into a slot. This is the most common type on later LR2 builds and the one most customers call us about when they've lost their only fob.
Some LR2 fobs include a dedicated remote start button, usually marked with a circular arrow. Press it twice and the engine starts from outside the vehicle. Typical range runs from around 100 to 200 feet. If your fob has that button and it's stopped working, it may be a battery issue or a programming problem we can sort on-site.
Two separate pieces: a transponder key that goes into the ignition to start the LR2, plus a small fob for remote lock and unlock. This setup was common on earlier LR2 models before Land Rover combined both functions into a single unit. Losing either piece is a problem, and we can replace and program both in one visit.
Land Rover LR2 key history
Smart key as an option
During this period Land Rover offered the smart key on higher LR2 trim levels while base models stayed with a traditional key. If your LR2 has push-button start and proximity entry, it came from the factory with the upgraded system. If it requires physically inserting a key, it left the factory with the standard setup. Both types are ones we carry blanks for and program on-site.
Legacy key system
This generation of the LR2 used a key system that Land Rover has since moved away from. The programming approach is specific to this era and differs from what later models use. Compatible blanks are still available, and our techs are familiar with the steps required to get a new key recognized by the factory immobilizer on these vehicles.
Smart key introduction
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the LR2 in this era, letting drivers leave the fob in a pocket or bag. Walk up to the door, grab the handle, and the LR2 unlocks on its own. Push the start button and you're moving. No inserting anything. This became the expected experience on better-equipped LR2 models going forward.
Advanced encryption era
Later LR2 key systems moved to AES-class encryption with rolling codes and mutual authentication between the fob and the vehicle. That security architecture means programming can't be done with basic equipment. It requires dealer-grade programming equipment with real-time security server access, which is exactly what we bring to your San Diego location.

Why pay the Land Rover dealer for an LR2 key?
A Land Rover dealer typically means a 3 to 7 day wait just to get an appointment scheduled. EZ Car Keyz arrives same-day at your San Diego County location, usually within 25 minutes of your call, with no tow required.
Common Land Rover LR2 key issues
LR2 key clone scam warning
Be cautious of services advertising LR2 key cloning at unusually low prices. Modern Land Rover keys use encrypted rolling codes that cannot simply be copied. Legitimate key replacement on the LR2 requires programming through the vehicle's OBD-II port using proper equipment that communicates with the factory immobilizer. If someone's quoting you a clone, they're either misinformed or selling you something that won't work.
LR2 immobilizer warning light stays on
A solid or flashing key icon on your LR2 dashboard means the vehicle isn't recognizing the transponder chip in your key. This can happen with a new unprogrammed key, a fob that's been damaged, or a fault in the factory immobilizer itself. It's worth having a tech come out and diagnose it on-site before assuming you need a full replacement.
Rapid battery drain in LR2 fob
Some LR2 proximity fobs go through batteries faster than expected because they're constantly broadcasting a signal. If you're swapping the battery more than once a year, try keeping the fob away from other electronics and metal surfaces when the vehicle isn't in use. A CR2032 is the typical replacement cell, and swapping it out does not erase the fob's programming.
Can you program an LR2 key yourself?
Land Rover requires PIN-based authorization before any key can be added to the LR2. That PIN isn't printed anywhere in your owner's manual. It has to be read directly from the vehicle's computer using dealer-grade programming equipment, which means there's no practical way to complete this step at home.
On LR2 models with smart key, the encrypted communication between fob and vehicle requires server-authenticated programming. There's no on-board sequence or DIY method that bypasses this. A tech with the right equipment and server access is the only path to a working key.
Adding a new proximity fob to the LR2 requires a scan tool capable of talking to the vehicle's key management system. There is no manual pairing procedure a driver can perform. If you've seen a YouTube video claiming otherwise, it almost certainly doesn't apply to this vehicle.

Fun Fact
Over the LR2's production run, Land Rover used multiple distinct fob designs representing different security generations. Each change brought updated encryption, which is part of why programming this vehicle correctly requires current dealer-grade equipment rather than off-the-shelf tools.
