The thing with the 2009 LR2 is that a lockout without any working fob puts you in all-keys-lost territory, and that's a different job than a simple lockout. It's not just about getting the door open. The immobilizer needs to be cleared and a new fob registered through the OBD port before the vehicle will start. I carry the equipment to handle that on site.

Short range on a fob that still works at close distance is almost always the battery going soft before it fully dies. The CR2032 in the 2009 LR2 fob will lose transmission strength before it loses enough charge to fail startup entirely. So you get this middle stage where you have to stand right next to the door to lock or unlock, but the car still starts.

Swap the battery first. If range doesn't come back with a fresh CR2032 seated correctly, then the fob's internal antenna or transmitter board is the next thing to look at. That's when a replacement fob and reprogramming becomes the actual fix.

Question 5

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with a tool?

You need a tool. The 2009 LR2 smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. There's no button combination, no ignition cycle trick. The fob has to be registered to the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment.

So if you bought a fob online, you didn't waste your money, but you're not done. You still need someone with the right equipment to pair it. That's a normal part of the job when I come out. Bring the fob you bought and I'll confirm whether it's the correct type for your vehicle before I start.
