Smart key became standard across all Discovery trim levels. The traditional ignition slot was eliminated entirely. Every Discovery from this point forward requires a proximity fob.
Smart Key Introduction
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the Discovery, allowing keyless entry and push-button start. Drivers could keep the fob in their pocket and never physically insert a key.
Next-Gen Encryption
The Discovery adopted next-generation encryption that requires the programming tool to authenticate through Land Rover's security server in real-time. No offline programming possible for new keys.
Unified Fob Era
Land Rover unified the Discovery's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.
Which Key Does Your Discovery Have?
Some Land Rover Discovery fobs include a dedicated remote start button (often marked with a circular arrow). Press twice to start the engine from outside the vehicle. Range is typically 100 to 200 feet.

Discovery Doors Not Locking or Unlocking Remotely
You swap the fob battery, reassemble, and the engine cranks but won't start. Classic immobilizer sync failure on 2005-2016 Discoverys. The transponder lost its handshake with the ECU. We re-sync through OBD-II and your Discovery starts like nothing happened.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Faulty internal microswitches and cold solder joints inside the fob are the usual culprit, not the battery. Common on 1999-2009 Discovery keys, especially dropped ones. Replacing CR2032s every few weeks? We test the circuit board on-site for repair vs replace.
Discovery Will Not Start With Key Present
On a 2017-2024 Discovery 5 that won't detect the smart key, we check sensor contacts around the door handles and start button. San Diego coastal air builds corrosion that interferes with proximity. Sometimes a cleaning, sometimes a JLR server reprogram.
Can You Program a Discovery Key Yourself?
Land Rover Discovery: All-keys-lost on this generation cannot be self-resolved. Even if you buy the correct blank, programming requires extracting the security PIN from the ECU with professional tools. Call (619) 876-1271.
Land Rover Discovery: On-board key learning available. With a working key, cycle the ignition ON-OFF 3 times within 10 seconds, ending in ON. The security light will flash. Within 30 seconds, press any button on the new fob. Locks will cycle to confirm.
Land Rover Discovery: No self-programming. Land Rover uses a proprietary encryption handshake that changes per vehicle. Even having the correct blank is not enough - the programming must go through authorized tools.
