Certain Discovery fobs include a dedicated remote start button, usually marked with a circular arrow symbol. Press it twice and the engine starts from outside the vehicle. Typical range runs from around 100 to 200 feet, useful in San Diego parking lots or when you want the cabin cooled down before you get in.

Smart Key Standard Era
From this point on, every Discovery trim came with a proximity fob as standard equipment. The traditional ignition slot was removed entirely, so every vehicle in this era requires a proximity fob to start and operate. There is no fallback to a conventional key.
Smart Key Introduction
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the Discovery during this period, letting drivers start the engine with a button press while the fob stayed in a pocket or bag. Physical key insertion became unnecessary, which was a meaningful shift in how Discovery owners interacted with their vehicles day to day.
Next-Gen Encryption
Discovery models from this era moved to a newer encryption standard that requires the programming tool to communicate with Land Rover's security server live during the key-addition process. Offline programming is not an option. This means a technician needs both the right equipment and an active data connection to add a key.
Unified Fob Era
During this period Land Rover consolidated the Discovery's remote and transponder functions into one remote-head key. The transponder chip moved out of the key blade and into the fob body itself, while a folding blade handled the physical key duties. Owners gained a tidier package with fewer separate pieces to carry.

Common Land Rover Discovery Key Issues
Discovery Doors Not Locking or Unlocking Remotely
If your Discovery fob buttons get no response but the vehicle still starts normally, the RF transmitter side of the fob may have failed while the transponder chip kept working. Start by swapping in a fresh battery. If the buttons still do nothing after the battery change, the fob itself likely needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.
Dead Key Fob Battery
The Discovery key fob runs on a replaceable coin cell battery. When it dies, the fob stops unlocking doors and won't trigger remote start. Your dashboard may show a "Key Battery Low" message before the fob quits entirely. Swap in a fresh battery and the fob should work again without any reprogramming needed.
Discovery Won't Start With Key Present
If your Discovery unlocks with the fob but refuses to start, the cause could be a weak fob battery, a failing start button, or a problem with the antenna that reads the transponder signal. Try holding the fob directly against the start button - this activates a backup reader built into the button itself and can confirm whether the fob is the problem.
Can You Program a Discovery Key Yourself?
Land Rover Discovery - all-keys-lost situation: this cannot be resolved without professional tools. Even if you source the correct blank key, programming requires reading the security PIN from the vehicle's computer using dealer-grade programming equipment. Self-service is not possible in this scenario.
Land Rover Discovery - on-board key learning available on certain model years: with a working key in hand, cycle the ignition on and off three times within ten seconds, ending in the on position. The security light will flash. Within thirty seconds, press any button on the new fob and the locks will cycle to confirm the key has been learned.
Land Rover Discovery - no self-programming path: Land Rover uses a proprietary encryption handshake that is unique to each vehicle. Buying the correct blank is only the first step - the actual programming must go through authorized dealer-grade programming equipment and cannot be completed with generic or consumer-level tools.
