Out in the Viejas Area near Alpine, I got a call from a Discovery owner who had done everything right. Fresh CR2032, installed correctly, and the fob still wasn't being recognized consistently. Some mornings it worked fine. Other mornings he'd walk up to the door and nothing happened. Start button would sit there unresponsive until he held the fob against it directly. Then it would start. Then it wouldn't.
He'd already been to the dealer for a diagnostic. They told him the fob was fine and sent him home. A week later it was doing it again.
When I got out there I went through the whole fob first. Battery was good, contacts clean, shell wasn't cracked. So I moved to the antennas. The 2016 Discovery has multiple antenna points for the smart entry system, and if one is picking up poorly, you get exactly the intermittent behavior he was describing. Consistent inside the car, inconsistent at the door handles, sometimes fine and sometimes not.
I ran the diagnostic through the OBD port, checked the key module communication, and found the fob wasn't the issue at all. The module was throwing a communication fault. That's a different repair conversation, but at least he had a real answer instead of another shrug.
I also programmed a spare fob for him while I was there. He'd been running on a single key for two years. That part took about twenty minutes. He paid a fraction of what the dealer had already charged him just to tell him nothing was wrong.
He drove off with a working spare and an actual diagnosis. That's the job.
