2001 Land Rover Discovery Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from someone over near RB Town Center who had their Discovery sitting dead in a parking lot. Not dead as in battery dead. Dead as in the key fob had stopped talking to the car, and they'd been clicking it for two days hoping it would sort itself out.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was check the CR2032. It tested low but not fully dead, which is that frustrating middle ground where the fob acts alive but isn't putting out enough signal to reliably hit the receiver. Swapped the battery on the spot and the remote functions came back immediately. Doors locked, unlocked, all of it.
But the engine still wouldn't start.
That's where it gets interesting on these. The remote head key for this generation carries a transponder that has to communicate with the immobilizer when you turn the ignition. A weak battery can mask that problem while you're focused on the remote side. The chip inside the key was the issue. The key needed to be properly programmed to the vehicle's security system.
I connected through the OBD port, enrolled the replacement key, and the Discovery fired right up. The owner had already called the dealer earlier that week and been told to tow it in and expect a wait for parts. They ended up standing in the parking lot watching me do the whole job on site instead.
