2002 Land Rover Discovery Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Fairbanks Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call about a 2002 Discovery that would not start. The owner had his one remaining key, the original remote head key, and the truck was just sitting there. No crank, nothing. He had already tried the key a dozen times.
I got there and he handed me the fob. CR2032 was original, probably 20 years old, barely showing any voltage. I swapped it out on the spot. Still no start. The remote buttons came back to life, but the engine still was not seeing the transponder signal. The vehicle had been sitting for a few months and something had knocked the key out of the system's memory.
On a truck this age, the relearn process does not require cloud access or remote authorization. The right tool, the OBD port, and some patience. I had the key re-enrolled and the engine running in about 30 minutes.
He mentioned the dealer had told him it would take several days to source a matching key and program it. I was already packing up the van by then. That kind of timeline just does not fit when you have one car and things to do.
