I got a call from someone in the Bancroft neighborhood of Spring Valley, parked in their driveway, going nowhere. The fob had been acting up for a couple of weeks, range was getting short, but it had still been starting the car. That morning it stopped working entirely. Key-not-detected on the dash, doors would not respond, and the owner was standing outside holding a fob that looked perfectly fine.
They had already driven to a parts store and bought a fresh CR2032 thinking that was it. Battery swap did nothing.
When I pulled up and got the fob in hand, the new battery was seated but one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow, not making full contact. I reseated the battery with proper clip pressure and tested range. Still weak. At that point the fob itself was the problem, not the battery.
I pulled a replacement fob from the van, connected to the OBD port, and ran the registration process on site. New fob paired to the vehicle, old one wiped from the system so it could not be used. Tested lock, unlock, and confirmed the car started cleanly. The whole thing was done in the driveway, about forty minutes start to finish.
The owner had already called the dealer before reaching me. They were told to bring the vehicle in, that a key would likely need to be ordered, and that availability on Land Rover parts could mean a wait. That was before any labor quote was even discussed. They called me instead and were back inside with a working key before lunch.
