Range Rover Velar Key Replacement Pricing in San Diego
Flat-rate pricing on every Range Rover Velar key type. The number we quote before we leave the shop is the number on your receipt, no add-ons once we arrive.
Which Key Does Your Range Rover Velar Have?
If the electronics inside your Velar fob still work but the housing is cracked or worn, a shell swap is the most cost-effective fix. The circuit board and buttons transfer into a fresh case with no reprogramming needed. We carry common Velar shells on the van.
A one-piece key with lock, unlock, and additional remote buttons built directly into the head. The blade is fixed rather than folding, and you insert it into the ignition to start the vehicle. This style was common on Range Rover Velar models from the 2000s and sits in the mid-range on our flat-rate price sheet.
A basic key with a transponder chip inside the bow. It turns in the ignition the same way a traditional key would, but the chip must communicate with the factory immobilizer before the engine starts. No remote functions, no proximity features. This is the least expensive Velar key type we replace and we quote it up front.
A rectangular black fob with chrome trim and the Range Rover logo. It never goes into an ignition slot. You keep it in your pocket and the car detects it when you walk up. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
The slim FCC K0BJXF18A proximity fob running an ID49 chip on a regular CR2032 coin cell. Same walk-up, pocket-detect operation, just no rechargeable battery to babysit. A hidden HU100 high-security blade backs you up if the cell dies. New keys authenticate through JLR servers, and the van carries everything to pair one at your location.
Range Rover Velar Key History
Current Generation
The current Range Rover Velar relies on the strongest encryption available in Land Rover's lineup. Programming requires up-to-date professional tools that stay authenticated with the factory servers. We carry that equipment on every San Diego County call and handle these vehicles on-site, so the price you get over the phone is the price on the receipt.
Rolling Code Era
An earlier stretch of Velar production moved to rolling code transponder technology, meaning the authentication value changes with every single use. That change made replay-style attacks impossible and raised the bar well above what fixed-code predecessors offered. Keys from this period still require professional cutting and programming, just at a different price point than the newest generation.
Budget Key Period
Base-trim Velar models from this era shipped with a cost-effective transponder key that carried no remote functions built in. A separate remote fob was offered as an accessory purchase, leaving owners to carry two pieces instead of one combined unit. Replacement cost on these is typically lower than later smart key configurations, and we reflect that in our quote.
Next-Gen Encryption
This generation introduced encryption that requires the programming tool to authenticate through Land Rover's security server in real time during key setup. There is no offline shortcut. We bring the equipment needed to complete that server handshake at your location anywhere in San Diego County, so the price stays the same whether you are parked in La Jolla or down near the 805.
L560 Launch Year
You turn this key in your hand and it feels like a premium piece of tech, because it is. Your 2018 Velar uses a rechargeable proximity smart key with an ID47 (PCF7953) transponder chip and push button start. Programming requires server authentication through JLR Pathfinder, which means no shortcuts and no DIY workarounds.
L560 Second Year
Land Rover leaned harder into keyless entry for 2019, but the core security stayed the same: ID47 (PCF7953) chip, rechargeable smart key, server-based authentication. The difference is that PIN extraction became mandatory for aftermarket key programming. We handle that extraction on-site with our JLR VCI interface.
L560 Updated Firmware
Here is where it gets tricky. Land Rover pushed firmware updates in 2020 that blocked older programming tools from communicating with the ECU. Your Velar still uses the same ID47 (PCF7953) chip and rechargeable smart key, but only the latest JLR SDD software can talk to it. We keep our subscriptions current for exactly this reason.
L560 Mid-Cycle
The mid-cycle Velar moved to the slim K0BJXF18A proximity fob with an ID49 (HITAG Pro) chip and a CR2032 coin cell at 315 MHz. There is a hidden HU100 high-security emergency blade for manual entry. Programming runs through JLR server authentication, no shortcuts, but the coin-cell design ends the rechargeable-fob drama. We pair a fresh key curbside.
L560 Facelift
The 2024 facelift added the 11.4-inch Pivi Pro display and a styling refresh, but the key never changed: same K0BJXF18A proximity fob, ID49 chip, CR2032 cell, hidden HU100 blade. Your 2024 through 2026 Velar still pairs new keys through JLR server authentication, and we hold current subscriptions to do it in your driveway, no flatbed.

Common Range Rover Velar Key Problems
Range Rover Velar Smart Key Relay Theft Risk
Smart key systems on the Range Rover Velar can be targeted by relay theft devices that amplify the fob's signal through walls and trick the vehicle into thinking the fob is nearby. When you park at home near the I-5 corridor or anywhere else in San Diego County, store the fob in a Faraday pouch or a metal container to block signal amplification and remove that vulnerability.
Range Rover Velar Unlocks but Will Not Start
If your Velar recognizes the fob well enough to unlock the doors but refuses to start, the cause is often a weak fob battery, a failing start button, or a problem with the immobilizer antenna. Try holding the fob flat against the start button before pressing it. There is a backup RFID reader inside the button that can read a low-battery fob at close range and allow the engine to start.
Dead Key Fob Battery
The Range Rover Velar fob runs on a replaceable coin cell battery, commonly a CR2032. As the battery weakens, the dashboard will usually show a "Key Battery Low" warning before the fob stops working entirely. Swap in a fresh battery and normal operation returns without any reprogramming. If the warning is new, handle it before it strands you somewhere off the 805.
Can You Program a Range Rover Velar Key Yourself?
Some Range Rover Velar configurations do allow on-board key learning when you already have two working keys. The procedure involves cycling the ignition in a specific sequence, watching for the security light to confirm the vehicle has entered learn mode, then presenting the new fob within the time window. Locks cycling confirms success. This only works on certain builds and requires at least one fully working key to start.
Other Range Rover Velar builds do not offer any self-programming path at all. These require OBD-II access, a security PIN pulled from the vehicle's computer, and dealer-grade programming equipment connected during the process. If you are not sure which category your Velar falls into, call us and we will tell you before any money changes hands.
A third group of Velar variants supports a simplified ignition-cycle sequence with a single working key. Insert and cycle the key on and off several times within a short window, wait for the security light to flash, then press a button on the new fob. The locks will cycle to confirm the new key was accepted. Check which procedure applies to your specific vehicle before attempting either method.

Fun Fact
A Range Rover Velar that has had all keys erased from the factory immobilizer cannot be started by even a perfectly cut key blade. The transponder chip inside the key must complete its handshake with the immobilizer first, and without that match the engine will not run.
