2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming take once you arrive at my car?

For the 2018 Velar specifically, adding a key when a working fob is already present usually runs 45 to 60 minutes on site. All-keys-lost takes longer because the vehicle security system has to be properly reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be enrolled, and that process has its own timing built in. Count on 60 to 90 minutes for that scenario.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a wide margin, and the difference isn't in how fast the programming software runs. It's everything around it. A Land Rover dealer has to order the fob through the manufacturer's parts chain, which owners have reported taking anywhere from a week and a half to over a month depending on availability. Then there's scheduling a service bay, the programming appointment itself, and the back-and-forth if anything doesn't go right on the first try.

Q: My 2018 Velar shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What else could cause that?

This comes up on Velars more than you'd expect. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't clear it, there are a few places to look. The fob's internal antenna or circuit board can develop a hairline crack from being dropped, even once on a hard floor. The car looks fine from the outside and the battery tests good, but the signal just isn't there anymore. Opening the fob and inspecting the board is the first step after ruling out the battery.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have you program it?

Yes, as long as it's the correct fob for this vehicle. Bring the part and I bring the tools. That said, verify the factory FCC ID on your original fob matches what you're buying before you order. The Velar went through different fob configurations across its production run and not every five-button fob that looks identical will pair correctly to your specific car.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from Downtown Fallbrook on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner had a 2018 Range Rover Velar sitting in a parking lot off Main Avenue, and the fob had stopped being recognized. She'd already tried the obvious thing, holding it closer, walking back to the car, all of it. Nothing. The dash was giving her a key-not-detected warning and the push-to-start wasn't responding.

She'd already called the dealer. They told her the car would need to come in, gave her a timeframe that stretched into the following week, and mentioned that a replacement smart key would need to be ordered. She didn't have a week.

I pulled up with the van and started at the beginning, which is always the fob itself. Opened it up right on the hood. The CR2032 inside wasn't dead, but it was reading low enough to cause exactly what she was describing: intermittent detection, not a clean failure. Swapped in a fresh cell, reseated the board, closed it back up.

That fixed about half the problem. The car was detecting the fob now, but the immobilizer hadn't been happy about the repeated non-starts and needed to be walked back through a proper sync using the diagnostic port. That's where the tools in the van earn their keep. Not a long process, but one that needs the right equipment talking to the right module.

From my arrival to handing her a fully tested, working key system took just under an hour. She mentioned what the dealer had quoted for a full replacement key. I didn't need to say much. The math did the talking.

Land Rover Range Rover Velar Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Land Rover key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments for Land Rover typically close in the early evening on weekdays and run limited or no hours on Sundays. If you lose your only fob on a Saturday night in Downtown Fallbrook, you're looking at Monday morning at the earliest just to begin the conversation, and that's before any key ordering or scheduling delay gets added on top. I work outside those hours.
