About Hummer Keys

Hummer key replacement overview in San Diego County

Underneath the badges, the H2 and H3 are pure GM truck: Passlock immobilizer, PK3 transponder chips, same platforms running under a Tahoe or a Canyon. Our van carries the GM-compatible tooling for all of it, plus the simpler mechanical setup for the H1 and the newer Ultium platform for the GMC Hummer EV. Mobile service across San Diego County, no tow truck needed for any generation.

Classic Hummer Keys, Cut and Coded at the Truck

Hummer

Different badges, same GM bones. The H2 sits on the Tahoe platform; the H3 sits on the Colorado platform. That means the key and immobilizer architectures are pure GM under the skin. H2 timeline: non-transponder keys through 2004, PK3 transponder chips added from 2005 forward, smart proximity fobs introduced on 2008 and 2009 trims. H3 launched in 2006 with transponders already standard, then picked up the same proximity fob rollout in 2008. The H1 is the outlier across the whole brand: plain metal keys plus fixed-code remote fobs for its entire production run, with no transponder at all on most civilian models.

Hummer Three Toolkits Covering the Whole Hummer Family

Three Toolkits Covering the Whole Hummer Family

Three different toolkits cover the whole Hummer family. Autel IM608 and GM Tech2-compatible tools handle all-keys-lost programming on H2 and H3 models at the truck without a tow. The H1 needs nothing past the key cutter, since there's no chip to program. The GMC Hummer EV with its Ultium platform proximity fobs gets a different blank and runs through updated GM tooling. All three workflows happen at your location anywhere in San Diego County.

What Makes Hummer Keys Different

Hummer

The H1 is the reason Hummer stands out in automotive locksmithing, and it stands out for being unusual rather than complicated. Almost every American-market vehicle built in the 1990s and 2000s ended up with some form of electronic immobilizer eventually. The H1 didn't. AM General built the civilian H1 as a direct derivative of the military HMMWV and carried over the same mechanical-first philosophy that the military used. While GM was rolling out PASS-Key transponder chips across its passenger car lineup through the mid-1990s, the H1 stayed on plain metal keys. Fixed-code remote fobs eventually showed up for convenience, but no transponder chip ever tied the H1 key to the ECU on civilian models.

Hummer What an H1 Key Job Actually Involves

What an H1 Key Job Actually Involves

End result on the bench: H1 key service is one of the simplest jobs an automotive locksmith ever runs. Cut the blade to the correct H1 profile, hand it over, drive away. There's no immobilizer in the loop, no programming step, no PIN to fetch from a server.

Hummer Why the H2 and H3 Don't Share That Oddity

Why the H2 and H3 Don't Share That Oddity

Worth noting: this oddity dies with the H1. The H2 and H3 that followed sit on GM truck platforms and inherit GM's full transponder and Passlock architecture, exactly the same workflows we run on a Tahoe or a Canyon. The H1 is the rare counterexample, a late-production American vehicle from the 90s and 2000s with no electronic key security on the civilian builds.

Hummer Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Hummer dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

GMC Hummer EV smart key service through the dealer runs $300 to $400 for the fob alone, with a tow on top since the truck has to be physically present at the dealership for programming. Our mobile alternative across San Diego County brings the correct blank to wherever the Hummer is parked, covers H2, H3, and EV under one mobile workflow, and finishes the programming at your truck with no tow involved.

Hummer Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Hummer H3 Passlock Triggering a No-Start
H3 Passlock Triggering a No-Start
Classic H3 problem caused by the Passlock II ignition cylinder sensor wearing out. The sensor reads a resistance value from the key, and when that reading drifts out of spec the BCM throws the truck into security mode and kills the fuel pump even though the key is correct. Symptoms: security light flashes on the dash, engine cranks but never fires. The 10-minute ignition-on reset cycle gets it running again temporarily. Once the issue starts repeating, the sensor itself needs to be swapped rather than running another reset.
Hummer H2 Locked Out With Both Fobs Suddenly Dead
H2 Locked Out With Both Fobs Suddenly Dead
When both H2 fobs go dead at the same moment, the problem is almost never two coincidentally dead fobs. It's a BCM desync triggered by one of three culprits: a recent battery disconnect, a fully drained vehicle battery, or a failing door ajar switch that quietly kept the truck in security mode with the dome lights on overnight. The fobs themselves are usually fine. An OBD-II resync via Autel or GM Tech2 restores function in minutes at the truck. Spotting a door ajar indicator with all doors actually closed? Swap that switch before the desync happens a second time.
Hummer H3 Ignition Voltage Drop Mimicking a Passlock Fault
H3 Ignition Voltage Drop Mimicking a Passlock Fault
Confusing one to diagnose because it looks like Passlock but isn't. Higher-mileage H3s start throwing intermittent no-starts where the security light stays off (unusual for true Passlock faults), but the ignition switch is feeding the BCM 4.4 volts instead of the expected 5 volts. That voltage drop is enough for the BCM to lose confidence in the key signal and refuse to start. Ignition switch swap is the fix. We test for voltage drop at the truck before recommending a part.
Hummer All Keys Lost on a Hummer H2 or H3, Handled Mobile
All Keys Lost on a Hummer H2 or H3, Handled Mobile
Split by year and platform for the Hummer all-keys-lost picture. The 2008 and 2009 H2 uses a timed three-cycle ignition sequence that doesn't require a working key, which puts it among the easier GM all-keys-lost jobs out there. Earlier H2s (2003 through 2007) are tougher and typically need a working master key or OBD access to complete. H3 all-keys-lost from 2006 through 2010 runs at the truck via BCM special functions using a scan tool. H2 and H3 blanks both ride with us, and the work finishes mobile across San Diego County with no tow truck involved.

Pro Tip

Hummer pro tip

If you've been running the 10-minute reset on your H3 every time Passlock locks you out, here's a useful next step before booking sensor replacement. After the reset restores start function, drive the H3 continuously for at least 10 minutes without shutting it off. That sustained run gives the Passlock module a full operating cycle to re-establish its baseline resistance reading with the ignition sensor warmed up and stabilized. The thing to know about Passlock failure: the sensor's resistance reading drifts with temperature. An aging sensor can read correctly when warm but fall out of tolerance when cold, which is exactly when most Passlock no-starts happen, even on mild San Diego mornings.

Hummer How to Confirm It's the Sensor

How to Confirm It's the Sensor

Diagnostic shortcut: if the no-start only happens on a cold first start but never after the truck has been running, the sensor is the issue rather than the key or the BCM. Ignition cylinder sensor replacement runs $50 to $100 in parts and permanently ends the reset cycle, no more 10-minute waits in the driveway.

Hummer Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
