H3 Key Security, Generation by Generation
1st Generation (Early)
GM built the H3 on the GMT355 platform and gave it Pass Key III+ immobilizer security from day one. Your key is a 3-button remote head with a transponder chip inside that talks to the Body Control Module every time you turn the ignition. No push-button start here; just a solid mechanical key with embedded electronics that requires OBD-II programming to pair.
1st Generation (Mid)
GM kept the same Pass Key III+ system but added rolling code sync for the remote entry functions. That means your fob communicates with the BCM using a code that changes every time you press a button. Same 3-button remote head key, same CR2032 battery, same FCC ID L2C0007T, but the remote side got a little smarter.
1st Generation (Late)
The final H3 years, including the H3T pickup variant, carried the same Pass Key III+ transponder and L2C0007T remote head key through to the end of production. Nothing changed on the security side. If you have a 2009 or 2010, your key is identical in function to the earlier models, and we program it the same way through the OBD-II port.
What Key Does Your H3 Actually Use?
Every H3 uses the same key: a black plastic remote head with three silver buttons and a standard metal blade. The transponder chip is built into the key head, so this one key handles door cylinders, remote entry, and engine start all in one piece.

Problems We See on the Hummer H3
Key Fob Battery Failure
CR2032 batteries inside H3 fobs run down faster than expected. The plastic shell stiffens after a decade of sun, so the seam cracks the moment you pry with a coin. Silent buttons? Fresh cell and careful split. Cracked shell? We transplant internals on-site.
Transponder Sync Loss
Cranks fine, won't fire, security light pulsing. Pass Key III+ losing handshake with the BCM, after fob battery swaps, fob impact, or apropos of nothing. Recovery is OBD-II reprogramming with a scan tool. We bring that to Carmel Valley or Encinitas.
Rolling Code Desync
People assume the remote is broken when lock/unlock stop responding. Usually it's not. Rolling code between fob and BCM fell out of sync, common if the H3 sat or the battery died. You need a working fob to re-enter learning mode; a scan tool makes it reliable.
FCC/PN Mismatch on Aftermarket Fobs
Before any cutting on an aftermarket H3 fob, we verify FCC ID and part number against what the BCM expects. Your H3 wants FCC ID L2C0007T paired with a part number in the 10335583 family. Amazon and eBay flood the market with the wrong silicon.
Can You Program a H3 Key on Your Own?
Not happening on the H3. There is no factory on-board sequence for transponder keys on these trucks, no matter how many forum threads suggest otherwise. The Pass Key III+ chip needs a real interface like the Autel IM608 or a GM Tech 2 to enroll. A remote-only manual trick circulates online but it does not work consistently across these trucks and does nothing for the transponder that the immobilizer actually checks. Call (619) 876-1271 and we will do it the right way.
How It Works

Reach Out
Call or text (619) 876-1271 with your exact Hummer H3 year and how many working keys you still have.

We Roll to You
Anywhere across San Diego County, from Oceanside down to Imperial Beach, we drive to where the Hummer H3 is parked.

Cut, Program, Verified
Blank gets cut to your VIN at the van, then the Autel IM608 plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash and enrolls both the Pass Key III+ transponder and the remote fob through the BCM in one go.

One More Thing
The Hummer H3 shares its keyless entry system with the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon from 2004 to 2012, meaning fobs with the RPO AU0 option are cross-compatible between all three trucks. GM basically gave a rugged off-road icon the same guts as a midsize pickup. Platform sharing at its finest.
