Got a call from someone parked near the Santee Lakes Area. H3, 2006. She said the remote stopped locking and unlocking a few days earlier, and now the truck wouldn't start at all.
She had already put in a new CR2032. Bought it at a drugstore, swapped it herself. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, I popped the key apart on my tailgate. The battery was seated fine, contacts looked okay at a glance, but there was a faint white residue on one of the contact clips, the kind that shows up when a little moisture gets into the housing over time. Cleaned that out, reseated everything. Tried the remote. Locks responded. Then she tried to start it.
Still wouldn't fire. Cranked, no start. That told me the remote receiver was back online but something else was off.
Pulled out my OBD tool, connected at the port under the dash, and ran a read on the immobilizer. The vehicle was only seeing one key in memory, and it wasn't the one in her hand. Somewhere along the way, probably from a battery swap on an older fob before this one, the key registration had gotten out of sync.
Did a fresh enrollment at the curb. Her existing key, programmed in. Engine started on the first try.
The whole call took maybe 35 minutes. She mentioned she had called the dealer earlier in the week and they told her to bring it in, they'd need to look at it, and she should plan on leaving it. That timeline didn't work. Mine did.
